Mission / SummaryThe Process Control Engineer will report directly to the Process Control Manager and serve as a point person for all facets of day‑to‑day process control support in an area of the facility.
Job Functions- Support daily and breakdown maintenance activities, especially those related to troubleshooting of DCS, QCS, and PLC systems with their associated I/O systems, HMI displays, and field devices.
- Provide process control engineering and configuration resources for capital projects.
- Support process control systems after hours and on rotating on‑call duty.
- Review and create documentation for new and existing systems such as loop sheets and logic.
- Monitor control system reliability and process variability, and take steps to eliminate any shortcomings.
- Lead software upgrades to the mill DCS systems.
- Serve as process control advocate working with corporate and local IT groups.
- Model safe behavior and practices, and participate in safety activities.
- Develop and lead preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of network infrastructure that supports the mills DCS hardware and software applications to ensure a high level of performance, security, and reliability.
- Assess overall system health continually through diagnostics and other system tools.
- Review spare parts to ensure an adequate number of compatible parts are maintained.
- Develop and document maintenance/troubleshooting procedures.
- Configuration and troubleshooting experience with DCS and PLC systems, including their connected HMI displays (Honeywell Experion, TDC 3000 DCS, ABB QCS, and Control Logix PLC experience are beneficial).
- Ability to create and review DCS, QCS, and PLC documentation, including P&IDs, loop sheets, and logic diagrams.
- Ability to support the network and computer systems connected to automatic control systems.
- BS/BA degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent manufacturing experience.
- 8+ years’ experience in an industrial maintenance organization; paper industry experience preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of DCS and PLC concepts and application.
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to create and sustain change.
- Demonstrated ability to engage a workforce.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Proactive problem‑solver.
- General schedule is an 8‑hour, Monday‑Friday assignment, but the employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and be punctual.
- Occasional overnight travel, including flying, driving, riding, or by rail.
- Excellent troubleshooting/problem‑solving techniques.
- Driven towards continual improvement in process and control system reliability.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
- Ability to mentor, coach, and train less experienced personnel.
- Technical learning agility and desire to learn new skills.
- Self‑initiated and self‑supervisory, influencing others.
- Serves as prime consultant and external spokesperson for the organization on highly significant matters.
