Job Summary:The Distribution Systems Operator Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of electricity or gas through utility distribution networks. This role involves real-time system monitoring, emergency response, and system reconfiguration using advanced tools such as SCADA. The position supports utility control center operations and requires strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:System Monitoring:
Continuously monitor distribution network components (e.g., transformers, breakers, switches) via SCADA and DMS platforms.Emergency Response:
Respond swiftly to system alarms, outages, and emergency events; isolate faults and restore service while following established safety and regulatory procedures.Load Management:
Monitor and balance system loads, implement load shedding or restoration plans during peak demands or abnormal conditions.Switching Operations:
Perform and document remote or manual switching operations to isolate faults, support maintenance, or reroute power.Troubleshooting:
Identify and resolve distribution issues related to equipment failures, voltage anomalies, and power quality disturbances.Data Analysis & Reporting:
Analyze operational data to detect patterns, system inefficiencies, or potential upgrades. Maintain accurate system logs and prepare operational reports.Communication & Coordination:
Communicate effectively with field crews, engineers, dispatchers, and emergency response teams to coordinate switching and restoration activities.System Maintenance Support:
Collaborate in scheduled system maintenance and inspection programs, ensuring minimal disruption to services.Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of all system events, switching operations, outages, and restoration efforts.Safety Compliance:
Adhere strictly to company safety policies, regulatory standards, and best practices. Promote a safety-first culture.Training & Development:
Participate in regular training programs to stay updated on SCADA/DMS tools, safety procedures, and evolving utility standards.Collaboration:
Work closely with engineering, planning, and maintenance teams to implement upgrades, expansions, and corrective actions.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
Advanced degrees preferred for senior roles.Certifications:
NERC Certification (as required by region or employer)
Other relevant utility operations certifications (preferred)
Experience:
1–5 years in utility system operations, control centers, or engineering support roles.
Prior exposure to distribution system equipment, operations, and SCADA platforms.
Technical Skills:
Proficient in SCADA, DMS, OMS, and utility-specific applications
Solid understanding of power distribution concepts and system design
Familiarity with electrical safety standards and regulatory compliance
Soft Skills:
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, especially under pressure
Excellent verbal and written communication
Team-oriented mindset and ability to work independently
Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Committed to safety, reliability, and continuous learning
Maintains composure and effectiveness during high-pressure events
