The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Maintain radio systems databases with personnel and Alias (Call Sign) changes, provide support for all public safety subscriber units.
  • Conduct annual maintenance of all subscriber units in MBC, maintain firmware and software support for subscriber units, repair and tune portable and mobile radio units, conduct bi-annual maintenance of portable subscriber unit batteries.
  • Install and monitor IP telephony systems for performance.
  • Monitor radio transmission to detect operational violations and technical malfunctions.
  • Maintain E911 Call Center communications equipment.
  • Determine the cause of improper functioning of all electronic communication equipment and related equipment.
  • Maintain communication equipment at remote sites as well as MBFD stations (including PA) and weather alert siren stations.
  • Vehicle installations of mobile subscriber units and verify good practices are met.
  • Installation of structured cabling systems inside/outside plant such as:
    Cat cabling and fiber optics in accordance with telecommunications industries association (TIA) guidelines and standards.
Education, training, and experience required for producing expected results of this position’s essential job responsibilities
  • Associate degree or four years work experience in a related field preferred or
  • Two (2) years of experience working in Commercial or Private radio trunking systems (or PCS / Cellular).
  • Some experience with telephone PBX or IP based telephony.
  • Some experience with the basic understanding of antenna systems.
  • Fundamental experience working with DC power systems and Uninterrupted Power Systems.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that may be acceptable to the appointing authority.
Special requirements
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Applicant must not have a State or Federal criminal conviction record.
  • Applicant must be fingerprinted and pass a local background check conducted by the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff Department.
Supervisory span of control

Work with contractual support personnel in day-to-day Business as Usual (BAU) activities.

Travel requirement

The Radio Technician II is required to travel minimally but may be required to do so on occasion. (5% = ~2 weeks per year)

  • Knowledge of troubleshooting, testing, and monitoring concepts.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the maintenance of communication radios and related electronic equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and materials of electronics and electricity.
  • Knowledge of computerized two-way radio communications.
  • Technical knowledge of maintaining and utilizing Harris and Motorola service software.
  • Knowledge of inherent occupational hazards and adherence to all safety precautions required of the work.
  • Skill to operate and maintain electronic and related equipment.
  • Skill to repair and maintain digital and analog equipment.
  • Skill in applying the principles and practices of radio communication as it applies to microprocessor, analog, and digital electronic equipment.
  • Skill concerning professionalism and courteousness.
  • Skill in working collaboratively as member of a work team.
  • Ability to understand, identify, analyze, and solve non-technical information related to mission of both the position and of the department.
  • Ability to resolve problems in a timely, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and organize work; set priorities and meet critical deadlines.
  • Ability to give and understand oral and written communication.
  • Ability to hear.
  • Ability to research, comprehend, and apply non-technical information related to the mission of the department.
