Job Summaries

Trainee:

Performs daily operational and technical duties at the Amerson Water Treatment Plant (AWTP) to ensure the highest quality of water to meet the demand of Macon-Bibb County. Performs laboratory and minor maintenance on plant equipment in the operation of the AWTP. Water Plant Operator Trainees are supervised by the Assistant Plant Manager and all certified plant operators. Water Plant Operators also perform and record daily laboratory testing to meet all State regulations.

This role is supervised by the Assistant Plant Manager and Director of Water Operations.

Operators:

Performs daily operational and technical duties at the Amerson Water Treatment Plant (AWTP) to ensure the highest quality of water to meet the demand of Macon-Bibb County. Performs and records daily laboratory testing to meet all State regulations. Performs daily observations on maintenance equipment in the operation of the AWTP. This position is supervised by the Assistant Plant Manager and Director of Water Operations.

Responsibilities

Trainee:
  • Monitor AWTP treatment process and SCADA system.
  • Performs pH, chlorine, fluoride, iron, manganese, turbidity, and other lab duties.
  • Perform daily maintenance checks on all plant equipment.
  • Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels and observes variations in operating conditions.
  • Prepare work orders on plant equipment and customer complaints.
  • Backwash filters, operate basin clarifiers and perform chemical drawdowns.
  • Order plant chemicals and other materials needed for plant operations.
Operators:
  • Monitor AWTP treatment process and SCADA system.
  • Performs pH, chlorine, fluoride, iron, manganese, turbidity, and other lab duties.
  • Perform daily maintenance checks on all plant equipment.
  • Make a visual inspection of all plant equipment and grounds.
  • Collect total suspended solids for State compliance.
  • Ability to utilize the City-Works program and train other employees on the use of the program.
  • Collects waste samples to conduct tests and prepares samples to be analyzed through complex testing.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports of laboratory results and data concerning the plant's operation and enters data into the computer.
  • Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels and observes variations in operating conditions.
  • Prepare work orders on plant equipment and customer complaints.
  • Backwash filters, operate basin clarifiers and perform chemical drawdowns.
  • Order plant chemicals and other materials needed for plant operations.
  • Assist management in the safety of plant operations.
  • Monitor and fill the reservoir as needed.
  • Operate all high-service pumps to ensure the plant meets system demand.
  • Collects distribution samples to conduct tests and prepares samples to be analyzed through complex testing.
  • Maintains records and prepares laboratory results and data reports concerning the plant's operation and enters data into the computer.
  • Change chlorine cylinders and adjust as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of buildings.
  • Performs preventive and minor maintenance.
  • Works with various chemicals and makes proper chemical adjustments.
  • Assist with in-house plant inspections and RMP.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Operate forklift.
  • Works with various chemicals involved in the treatment process.
Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must obtain Class III Licensure within two years of employment.
  • Must be available to work rotating shifts.
  • Some computer skills required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent walking, standing, and stooping.
  • Occasional sitting, crouching, climbing, or balancing.
  • Occasional requirement to climb and may involve traveling over various terrain.
  • Ability to lift to waist level, pull, and carry 50 pounds or more.
  • Use hands to grasp, write, draw, and operate office equipment.
