Summary Description of Classification: Employees in this class are responsible for the care and safety of students with disciplinary issues transported to and from their homes and schools. The nature of work involves managing student behavior so the driver can operate the school bus safely by creating a positive and safe transportation environment. Bus attendants must exercise constant alertness to children's behavioral problems and react promptly in the events of disciplinary outbreak or other problems.
The employee must also be knowledgeable of all students assigned to the bus and work under the direction of a Transportation Supervisor, teachers, administrators and bus operators.

Knowledge, Abilities and
Skills:
Aptitude for working with children; knowledge of child development and behavioral issues; considerable patience and ability to assist the well‑being of students and maintain the bus in an orderly manner; ability to keep confidential student information; ability to take control and enforce bus rules and regulations; knowledge of bus evacuation procedures; physical and emotional stamina; good human relations and communication skills;
strong ethics involving safety; ability to learn new methods and apply them in daily routine; operating knowledge of hand brake, air brake, chock and general bus fueling.
Education, Training and
Experience:
Completion of high school or GED. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered. Some ability to communicate in sign language desirable, but not required.
Certificate and License Requirements: Certified in basic First Aid and CPR desirable, but not required.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Must bend and reach in awkward positions to secure children and equipment. Must possess physical and emotional stamina.
Special Requirements: Possible extended day runs. Required to attend in‑service training.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works with student population with disciplinary issues.
- Is able to lift students for emergency bus evacuation.
- Must be on the bus at the appropriate time to check equipment and leave on time.
- Assigns students to seats.
- Observes and responds to students with behavior changes and any other unusual condition on the bus and implements behavior controls when necessary.
- Assists a substitute bus operator with directions.
- Performs bus attendant pre‑trip inspection of special equipment.
- Completes paperwork as assigned.
- Keeps required equipment clean and in good working order.
- Treats all students and others with respect and compassion.
- Deals in an effective and tactful manner with all students. Assists the bus operator in performing bus evacuation drills.
- Is calm in an emergency situation and efficiently and quickly evacuates students when needed.
- Performs related work as required.
