This is an entry-level professional engineering position responsible for performing technical plan reviews and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. Work involves reviewing development and building plans, performing field inspections, coordinating with planning and zoning, supporting building and code compliance functions, and occasional projects with Public Works. Assignments are performed under general supervision with increasing independence as experience is gained.
ESSENTIALDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review building, site, and civil engineering plans for compliance with City codes, land development regulations, Florida Building Code, and applicable engineering standards.
- Assist in the review and coordination of development applications, including site plans, subdivisions, and stormwater management systems.
- Participate in public works projects from design through construction, including review of technical specifications and coordination with consultants and contractors.
- Conduct field inspections for infrastructure, stormwater, drainage, grading, utilities, right-of-way, and other engineering-related work.
- Monitor construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, permits, and applicable regulations.
- Work closely with planning and zoning staff to ensure developments meet City design, drainage, erosion control, and floodplain requirements.
- Assist building and code compliance staff in evaluating structural, site, and drainage compliance issues.
- Respond to inquiries from the public, contractors, developers, and other agencies regarding engineering, development, and permitting requirements.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, and project documentation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods related to municipal infrastructure, stormwater management, grading, and site development.
- Familiarity with Florida Building Code, City land development regulations, and applicable state and federal standards.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, construction drawings, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and GIS applications.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment across multiple departments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
- Engineer Intern (EI) certification in Florida, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire, preferred.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Internship or prior work experience in municipal engineering, construction, or plan review is preferred but not required.
- Work is performed both indoors in an office environment and outdoors at construction sites in varying weather conditions.
- Requires occasional evening or weekend work for inspections or public meetings.
- Work requires standing, walking, and climbing at job sites.
- May require extended hours during declared emergencies.
