Job SummaryThe Test Assistant provides test services to support the operation and maintenance of substation and electrical equipment with direction from a Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist, Test Specialist or Test Engineer. This position is a four (4) step progression that provides the experience and training necessary for an incumbent to be eligible for advancement to the Test Specialist classification.
Position Requirements- A Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology OR an Associate's degree in electrical engineering or electrical technology OR formal education equivalent to an Associate's degree in math and science.
- Valid motor vehicle license.
- Must stand on call assignments.
- Strong knowledge of and experience with transmission protection devices such as carrier communication equipment, electro‑mechanical and microprocessor relays, electrical protection principles, electronic and computer‑controlled systems, computer networking techniques, National Electrical & National Electrical Safety Codes, relay and control operational and safety procedures, designing testing systems and equipment, strong organizational skills, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Performs power factor and breaker timing tests.
- Analyzes and interprets test results and presents findings for review.
- Performs basic relay testing.
- Performs technical calculations for test applications.
- Performs cable proof tests.
- Performs cable locating and fault locating services.
- Assists with the installation and testing of mobile transformers.
- Locates sources of radio and television interference.
- Performs prescribed tests on underground network protectors.
- Performs and supports the troubleshooting, repairing, and testing of electrical devices such as recloser controls, battery chargers, voltage regulators, etc.
- Adjusts and repairs substation recording and indicating meters other than watt hour meters.
- Assists with substation modifications.
- Assists with power quality investigations.

Position DescriptionTest Assistant (Steps 1-4):
This is a four‑step progression providing the experience and training for advancement to Test Specialist. The selected candidate will be slotted at the appropriate level based on education/experience. No experience is required for level
1. Under direct supervision, the individual provides test services to support the operation, maintenance, and construction of substation and electrical equipment with direction from a Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist, or Test Specialist. Primary duties include performing power factor insulation testing, breaker timing testing, analyzing and interpreting test results, basic protection relay testing, technical calculations for test applications, and assisting with annual transmission line telecommunications testing.
Test Specialist (Steps 1-4): A minimum of 2 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of related experience with an Associate’s degree is required. The individual must have working knowledge of substation equipment, understanding of and ability to properly and safely test equipment, strong computer skills, and ability to operate a variety of software programs for computer automated testing.
The role involves planning and performing construction testing, maintenance testing, operations investigations, defective equipment testing, and providing technical assistance services.
Project Test Specialist (Steps 1-2):
Individual must currently hold the title of Project Test Specialist or have held this title in the past. This role acts as project and/or crew leader, performing assignments requiring engineering level expertise and extensive experience associated with planning and performing construction testing, maintenance testing, investigation of electrical operating equipment, defective equipment testing, and related technical assistance.
