Position: Medical Assistant (Part-Time)

Medical Assistant:
Ophthalmology (Part‑time)

Location: Madison, IN 47250

Job Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for performing an extensive number of ophthalmic data collection functions as delegated by the physician, to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma; some college preferred.
  • One to two years experience as a certified ophthalmic assistant (preferred).
  • Valid proof of certification as an ophthalmic assistant (preferred).
Essential

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathetic personality with concern for patients’ needs.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy.
Responsibilities

Communication and Patient Care

  • Acquaint all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.
  • Obtain patient history including chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
  • Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks.
  • Provide back‑up to the ophthalmic photographer regarding fundus, exterior, and anterior segment photographs.

Triage

  • Determine which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated.
  • Communicate with reception to facilitate proper patient flow.
  • Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
  • Advise patients as to who will see them following testing and make patients comfortable during wait.
  • Escort all patients from the waiting room for data collection.

Instrument Maintenance

  • Troubleshoot instruments as necessary.
  • Perform archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Perform autoclaving and maintain instrument sterility.
  • Report continued difficulty to Lead Ophthalmic Technician.

Administrative

  • Seek advice from more senior staff as necessary, never performing beyond capabilities.
  • Maintain cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Maintain backup levels of stock in exam and procedure rooms.
  • Perform other duties as required.

This position operates in a professional office environment.   • Regularly required to talk or hear and communicate with customers.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
