• Prepare and apply orthopedic devices such as casts, braces, and splints.
• Explain care and maintenance of orthopedic devices to patients and caregivers.
• Adjust or remove orthopedic devices under the direction of an orthopedic surgeon.
• Perform wound care and dressing changes.
• Order and maintain orthopedic supplies and equipment; manage inventory and ordering new stock.
• Assist in setting up and stocking examination rooms.
• Decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments.
• Remove staples or sutures (as needed).
• Assist orthopedic physicians in non‑operative bone fracture reduction.
• Use specialized tools and equipment to cut or remove casts.

The Casting/DME Technician is responsible for the application and removal of casts (simple & complex), orthopedic splints, and durable medical equipment (DME). The role involves significant patient contact, assessment of patients of all ages, and adherence to proper casting, splinting, and DME protocols. The technician must communicate effectively with providers and patients, maintain confidentiality, apply, modify, repair, and fit a wide variety of casts, splints, and braces.

Additional responsibilities include stocking and ordering supplies, assisting specialty programs, handling cold therapy units, participating in clinical pods, and obtaining insurance verification or prior authorization for certain DME supplies.

• Apply and remove upper and lower extremity casts, from simple to complex.
• Apply and remove splints and DME.
• Remove sutures and staples.
• Perform basic wound care.
• Assist with stocking and ordering supplies.
• Assistance with specialty programs and cold therapy units.
• Assist in clinical pods as needed.
• Obtain insurance verification/prior authorization for certain DME supplies.
