Work schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Purpose of Position: Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities, the District’s Architect manages architectural and engineering work, including design, construction, remodeling, maintenance, and repair of all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities. The Architect leads building improvements focused on student safety, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and non‑fossil energy projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • A. Architectural Documentation (50%)
    • Develop construction documents, including contracts, specifications, and construction drawings.
    • Prepare documents for internal or external approval.
    • Submit to city and/or county officials for official review and approval.
    • Identify and implement relevant building codes to ensure compliance.
    • Coordinate construction, maintenance, and repair activities involving consultants, suppliers, contractors, skilled trades, and building administrators.
    • Create spaces relevant to K‑12 learning aligned with the Strategic Plan of MMSD.
  • B. Design & Construction Oversight (40%)
    • Lead all phases of the architectural project lifecycle from conceptual design through construction administration.
    • Review, approve, and issue design modifications as the licensed architect responsible for project integrity.
    • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks to project outcomes.
  • C. Organizational Responsiveness & Compliance (5%)
    • Serve on committees and work groups as assigned.
    • Maintain knowledge of rules, regulations, codes, and protocols.
    • Participate actively in meetings and training.
    • Review and process open records requests regarding sustainability efforts.
    • Forecast and manage fiscal responsibilities such as invoices and reports.
  • E. Other Duties (5%)
    • Perform additional duties assigned by executive leadership.
    • Attend district and school functions supporting MMSD strategic framework.
    • Complete district-required training.
    • Build collaborative relationships with business partners.
Other Experience and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of building codes, financial competence to reduce costs, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; experience addressing senior management.
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, email, Google Workspace, and document management.
  • Ability to work safely, independently or as part of a team, resolve conflict, make decisions, and adhere to deadlines.
  • Commitment to anti‑racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Project management experience including scope, schedule, budget adherence.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, electrical systems and building materials.
  • Experience preparing estimates for construction and remodeling projects.
  • License:
    Licensed Architect in Wisconsin or eligibility within six months; certifications such as AIA, RA, PE, LEED‑AP, NCARB preferred.
  • Experience with K‑12 educational building projects.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements

Ability to work under safe, comfortable conditions with minimal exposure to environmental factors.
