Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and energetic Special Education Assistant (SEA) to support medically fragile students with complex health needs at Schenk Elementary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with students who have health, physical, emotional, intellectual, and/or behavioral disabilities.
  • Provide student support including g‑tube or oral feedings, diapering, bathroom assistance, mobility training, wheelchair/ambulation, and other prescribed medical procedures.
  • Under teacher direction, provide instructional support in specialized and inclusive learning environments and at community‑based sites.
  • Assist students individually and in small groups with specialized programming.
  • Monitor and support student behavior consistent with the behavioral educational plan (BEP).
  • Support social skills development and apply restorative practices for conflict resolution.
  • Assist with transporting students between classrooms and other learning environments.
  • Assist trained personnel with loading and unloading students from vehicles.
  • Accompany and support students on school‑related outings.
  • Help staff with students’ adaptive/self‑care needs throughout the day.
  • Maintain health records and follow established health plans and protocols, including daily charting and data collection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned when the student is not in attendance (e.g., supervise lunchrooms, recess, playground, and hallways).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills with staff and students, including the ability to relay changes in health status.
  • Ability to implement the prescribed health plan and recommendations from occupational and physical therapists.
  • Consistent application of appropriate hygiene practices and emergency protocols.
  • Ability to monitor and respond to student behavior as outlined in the BEP.
  • Maintaining student confidentiality.
  • Effective communication with non‑verbal or unintelligible students and culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to walk, lift (up to 50 lbs.), climb stairs, bend, reach, extend, and kneel as required by job duties.
  • Recognition of implicit bias and commitment to equity, anti‑racism, and cultural competence.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Desire to work with students who have complex health needs.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Current AHA BLS CPR/AED for HCP certification (or obtain within 3 months of hire).
  • Experience working cross‑culturally and commitment to improving cultural competence.
  • High school diploma and completion of the MMSD Medically Fragile SEA training.
  • Associate’s degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school (or equivalent assessment).
  • Department of Public Instruction Certification (License) to work with disabled children (may apply during/after offer).
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally; occasional walking, sitting, stooping, and reaching. Manual dexterity required for general tasks. Ability to operate office equipment. May be required to stand for extended periods.

Working Conditions
  • Required travel within the district and to off‑site meetings.
  • Work evenings, nights, and some weekends.
  • School‑based position; in‑person attendance required unless otherwise directed.
