Purpose Of PositionThe school nurse is a core member of the school’s integrated pupil services team. This team works with teachers, administrators, families, and community organizations to design and deliver a comprehensive, coordinated, and customized system of student support. The primary purpose is to create environments that maximize learning opportunities and prepare students for personal success as college, career, and community ready individuals.
The nurse is an advocate for educational equity, promotes healthy development, and leads systemic change within the school community.
- Provide leadership in the development and evaluation of school-based health policies and procedures
- Lead and participate on the Student Support and Intervention Team (SSIT)
- Participate on the School-based Leadership Team (SBLT)
- Develop Individualized Care Plans (IHP) and monitor interventions and outcomes
- Develop Emergency Health Plans (EHP) for school staff and students with life-threatening health conditions
- Provide training and monitor the quality and safety of nursing interventions delegated to non-nurse staff
- Serve on IEP and 504 teams
- Educate staff about implications of chronic illness for school and academic success
- Promote attendance and engagement of students with chronic health conditions
- Plan and implement systems for safe transitions of students with IHPs and EHPs
- Coordinate with families to obtain primary and specialty care
- Refer to community partners to ensure continued health care for students
- Facilitate enrollment in Badger Care for eligible students
- Provide formal classroom instruction (e.g., human growth and development) and health office guidance
- Support health promotion activities and provide group interventions aligned with tier 2 practices
- Monitor environmental safety in collaboration with building leadership
- Participate in planning for prevention and management of school violence, AOD use, and bullying
- Ensure immunization compliance and manage episodes of communicable disease per MMSD guidelines
- Coordinate health screening programs and participate in the school crisis response team
- Respond to health emergencies and assist with emergency preparedness planning
- Collaborate with others to accommodate students with mobility or other needs
- Participate in violence risk assessments and suicide risk assessments as part of student services
- Provide emergency treatment for anaphylaxis and severe asthma; oversee care by nurse assistants

- Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an NLNAC/CCNE-accredited program. Official transcripts required for formal employment.
- Current valid license to practice as a registered professional nurse in Wisconsin.
- Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Nurse license must be obtained within 3 years of employment
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Basic Emergency Care Course to be completed within 6 months of employment or already completed within 3 years prior
- Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence
- Previous school nurse experience
- 2-3 years experience in hospital or clinic
- Master’s prepared pediatric or family nurse practitioner with appropriate certification
- Master’s degree in nursing or related field
- National School Nurse Certification
