Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional support and reinforcement to students in academic, behavioral and functional areas across school, community and vocational settings.
  • Implement curriculum and behavioral intervention strategies under the direction of a teacher and/or related services staff.
  • Assist with transfers, applying adaptive devices, tube feedings, diapering, bathroom assistance and mobility training.
  • Consistently use proper hygiene practices as prescribed by MMSD health policies.
  • Coordinate and communicate with staff to provide feedback regarding student performance.
  • Collect and document student progress data (academic and behavior).
  • Monitor and implement positive behavior strategies, including physical restraint/management and safe space procedures.
  • Supervise students during lunch, recess, playground, hallways and field trips.
  • Participate in on‑the‑job training and district‐level training.
  • Assist with loading and unloading school buses.
  • Tape record books and prepare instructional materials under a teacher’s direction.
  • Maintain records and a daily schedule with direction from the case manager.
  • Maintain a mature, patient and compassionate demeanor when working with all students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Provide individual and small‑group instructional reinforcement.
  • Work independently with students in diverse settings under teacher direction.
  • Maintain accurate student data.
  • Handle physically aggressive students.
  • Work with non‑verbal students or those with limited speech.
  • Follow teacher direction, written plans, IEPs, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse students, staff and community, orally and in writing.
  • Maintain student confidentiality.
  • Perform physical tasks such as walking, lifting (up to 50 lb.), climbing, bending, reaching and kneeling.
  • Use basic computer skills (e‑mail, internet, word processing).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school, or assessment passed onsite in lieu of college credits.
  • Experience working cross‑culturally or a commitment to improving one's cultural competence.
  • Department of Public Instruction Certification (License) to work with disabled children.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree or 48 academic credits beyond high school.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Prior experience in a public school setting.
  • Experience working with children who have disabilities.
  • Experience working with children who are non‑ambulatory and/or nonverbal.
  • CPR certification.
  • First aid training.
  • Experience with e‑mail, internet, and word processing programs.

Working Conditions

  • Work may occur in varying indoor and outdoor environments, including inclement weather and spaces without air conditioning.
