Overview
As this is a high level position, and will require a Wisconsin Professional Land Surveyor license (PLS), we ask that you only apply if you are able to perform the items listed and meet the required Education/Experience qualifications. This is NOT a Pipeline/Transportation/GPS position. JSD is growing as a leader in the Land Development industry. We are looking for a qualified and dynamic professional to join our Survey Department in our Madison Regional Office (Verona, WI) in the role of Professional Land Surveyor.
This position reports to the Director of Survey and works with the project team, government agencies, internal multi-discipline staff, and Survey Field Staff on project schedules and task completion. The Professional Land Surveyor will perform the office side of land surveying functions on project types and sizes including land development sites, land divisions, condominiums, transportation platting and civil engineering projects.
We are looking for a self-motivated, quick thinker, and problem-solver who seeks accurate, innovative, and efficient methods to meet clients’ needs while mentoring, training, and growing our technicians and crew chiefs.
Responsibilities- Directing and preparation of all types of surveys, including plats of survey, subdivision plats, CSMs, ALTA/NSPS, legal descriptions and exhibits, condominium plats, horizontal & vertical control surveys, GPS surveying and mapping, aerial mapping, and construction surveying and mapping.
- Provide oversight and guidance of fieldwork associated with land surveying, engineering, and construction projects.
- Project administration and design support for land division projects, including scoping, survey estimates, and schedules.
- Coordinate project team activities, attend community meetings when needed, and prepare land division submittals and closeout documentation.
- Draft surveys and perform calculations including lot dimensions, areas, volumes, and cut/fill analyses.
- Research public records to determine existing property boundaries, easements and other property information.
- Prepare flood elevation certificates.
- Maintain open liaison between departments and facilitate communications regarding ongoing projects and status updates.
- Filing necessary applications and facilitating agency communication for Land Division Projects.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and training to engineering and surveying technicians and work closely with project managers in civil, planning, and landscape disciplines.
- Preference: Minimum 5-10 years of work experience as a land surveyor in Land Development, Construction, or Land Division (not Pipeline or transportation exclusive experience).
- Required Education: An associate degree in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology with at least 3-5 years of work experience as a surveyor.
- Licensing: Must have a current PLS or ability to obtain licensure in Wisconsin.
- Experience: Land surveying: 10 years (Required).
- Other: Ability to commute to Madison, WI (53593) and relocate before starting work (required).
- Concentration, multi-tasking, and effective communication with co-workers, supervisors, and clients.
- Strong working knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals and practices.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work extended hours as required to meet client, project, and business demands.
- Desire to deliver creative and innovative solutions to clients.
- Detail-oriented mindset.
- Ability to travel to projects and meetings throughout Wisconsin as needed.

- Pay: $70,000.00 - $ per year
