About Type One Energy
Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable, affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines, together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies.
If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision, join us as a Radio Frequency Engineering Summer Intern . This is what you need to know:
Location: Madison, WI
Salary: $25-$30 per hour, 40 hours per week
Contract: 12-week contract
- Summer 2027 (May 24thStart Date)
Reporting to: Sr. RF Engineer
Your role in the mission:
As a Radio Frequency Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the design and development of electromagnetic (EM) systems and components for our fusion energy projects. Working alongside experienced engineers and physicists, you’ll gain hands-on experience diving into a complex and multi-faceted radio frequency (RF) project, leveraging EM analysis tools like ANSYS or COMSOL Multiphysics for 3D modelling, while learning about the technical challenges and tradeoffs inherent to RF design and development in a cutting-edge R&D environment.
Key responsibilities could include:
- Design RF and optical components using tools such as COMSOL and ANSYS
- Gain a deeper understanding of RF performance through a combination of analytical and numerical solutions
- Provide trade-off estimations using MATLAB or Python (or equivalent language)
- Work with Vector Network Analyzers to measure RF performance of components
- Assess multi-physics interactions such as plasma absorption characteristics or RF-based heating
- Contribute to design reviews and documentation to ensure accuracy and manufacturability
- Correlate analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspection results.
- Collaborate with engineers across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, systems) to support ongoing development projects
- Participate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing as needed
What you’ll need:
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Radio Frequency Engineering
- Strong understanding of RF design fundamentals and principles
- Coursework or project experience with EM modelling using Ansys, COMSOL, AWR or equivalent solver
- Ability to critically evaluate simulation results, including checking for mesh convergence and reasonableness of boundary conditions
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment
- Strong attention to detail and solid problem-solving skills
Nice to have:
- Scripting experience (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent language) to automate or post-process simulation runs
- Familiarity with Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) principles for plasma
Type One Energy applies proven advanced manufacturing methods, modern computational physics and high-field superconducting magnets to develop its optimized stellarator fusion energy system. Our Fusion Direct development program pursues the lowest-risk, shortest-schedule path to a fusion power plant over the coming decade, using a partner-intensive and capital-efficient strategy.
