Job SummaryThe Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Tax Managing Director is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.
Job Duties- Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensures internal teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
- Manages engagements to achieve engagement management metrics.
- Practices hands‑on client service delivery.
- Encourages team’s adherence to TQM policies (including engagement letters, documentation, etc.).
- Research
- Identifies when research is needed, frames issues concisely, and reports the analysis.
- Identifies complex issues for the engagement team and provides research methodology.
- Serves as a technical reviewer of WTAs in an area of expertise.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Applies Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Applies technical expertise regarding income tax provisions in areas of international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation.
- Reviews and applies income tax provision efficiently.
- Tax Consulting
- Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing methods to maximize client benefits.
- Applies expert knowledge of combining tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge.
- Applies general knowledge of multiple tax specialties (International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.
- Tax Specialization
- Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities in one or more taxation areas.
- Has expert knowledge of standards application.
- Recognized as industry expert in a specialized field of taxation.
- Uses expertise to advise clients on tax implications and recommend alternative actions and compliance methods.
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve clients, the firm, or personnel.
- May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as the situation dictates.
- Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
- Act as a career advisor to associates, senior associates, and managers.
- Schedule and manage workload of associates, senior associates, and managers.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates, senior associates, and managers.
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or equivalent designation) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
