Data Engineer II

The Office of Informatics and Information Technology (IIT) is seeking an outstanding candidate for a Data Engineer II position to manage and fulfill research data needs for a grant funded project. The responsibilities of the incumbent will include gathering requirements, developing code, retrieving data from Epic’s reporting databases, transforming data, and maintaining documentation. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic and a professional, enthusiastic attitude.

This role is contingent upon external grant funding and is expected to last for two years.

We are currently seeking to fill two open positions: one with a primary focus on radiological image analysis and the other centered on data science. Each role offers unique opportunities to contribute to innovative research and development within our team.

• Position is anticipated to be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus location.
• Terminal, 24 month position.
• Possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

• Implements data analysis steps in collaboration with data scientists, statisticians, and/or other researchers and may use technologies that support data at scale.
• Selects appropriate technologies and optimizes pipelines for performance.
• Serves as an institutional subject matter expert and liaison to key internal and external stakeholders regarding automated data management and analysis at scale for research and represents the interests of large-scale data management and analysis for research.
• Organizes data preparation and analysis steps into reproducible pipelines that can process similar data sets automatically.
• Prepares data sets for current and future analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources and may use technologies that support data at scale.
• Develops, constructs, tests, and maintains architectures for large-scale data management and analysis.

This position is within the School of Medicine and Public Health’s Office of Informatics and Information Technology (IIT). IIT is a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, engineers, developers, and IT support staff. We offer a variety of Informatics and IT services to departments and research staff within the School of Medicine and Public Health and beyond to support the conduct of high-quality clinical and translational research.

• Informatics:
  We provide innovative solutions and training for a broad spectrum of clinical and translational research utilizing real-world data to facilitate rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice, with an emphasis on precision medicine, healthcare delivery, and population health.
• Technology Solutions:
  We provide technology solutions to the School of Medicine and Public Health including cybersecurity, educational technology, and IT support.

This role is part of the Clinical Research Data Services (CRDS) team within SMPH-IIT. The CRDS team plays a critical role in advancing clinical research across SMPH by providing comprehensive data and computational support to investigators and research teams. CRDS team members provide support with research design, data extractions, data transformation and compute needs.

CRDS is dedicated to enabling high-quality, data-driven research. The CRDS team collaborates with faculty, staff, and research partners to ensure studies are designed and executed using robust data strategies. Services include support for research design, data extraction and integration from sources such as electronic health records, data transformation and analysis to create research-ready datasets.
