Position: QUALITY CONTROL/ WELDER

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for structural department welding projects; performs specific QC tasks including visual inspection, documentation, measurement, identifying non‑conformances, and adherence to Standards.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Welder has knowledge of commonly used welding concepts, practices, and procedures; relies on pre-established guidelines to perform the job; QC ensures fabrication is completed according to established quality standards, applicable specifications, and regulatory requirements, working under direction of QC Lead and Shop Manager.

Specifically:

  • Read and interpret weld symbols; follow weld marking requirements.
  • Complete day‑to‑day QC activities and work assignments as communicated through management by conducting visual and dimensional checks on fabricated steel, to include welds, bolted connections, surface preparation, and materials.
    • Ensure welds are of acceptable visual quality; inspect for proper size, length and quality according to contract and code compliance; ensure proper fit‑up per contract and maintain code compliance.
    • Ensure code compliance by verifying all relevant work conforms to AISC standards, project drawings, and other relevant specifications.
    • Confirm quality standard testing and evaluation processes are adhered to and ensure quality structural steel fabrication is performed to applicable specifications and codes.
    • Maintain quality control documentation such as checklists and logs.
    • Support assessment of test results and accept recommended changes; pause production on individual items as needed.
  • Learn full‑pen welds.
  • Operate overhead cranes.
  • Use a torch, handheld plasma torch, carbon arc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE and SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; technical degree in welding preferred.
  • Prior experience in structural steel fabrication and coatings required.
  • Proficient use of MS Office products to include Excel and Outlook; experience with Tekla Fabsuite preferred.
  • Knowledge of welding processes, techniques, standards, and quality systems, with the ability to interpret complex blueprints and codes is essential.
  • Metal materials methods a plus.
  • Ability to understand and follow all McFarlane quality and safety procedures.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills to work well with others.
  • Proven self‑starter with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

    While performing the duties of this position, team member is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands and fingers, grip; reach; stoop, kneel, bend, twist, squat, crouch, pull; and talk and hear. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Will be required to use computer. Close distance and long‑distance vision. Ability to lift, push, pull and carry 50 lbs.

    Must wear PPE while on the Floor. Demonstrates accountability for all safety procedures, leading by example.
