Job SummaryThe Researcher II in Dr. Brigitte Smith's Lab will play a key role in advancing outcomes-focused research within WiSOR by supporting projects that rely on large-scale informatics and data-sharing collaborations. This position is responsible for training individuals and groups on research protocols and specialized processes, as well as developing and implementing complex research methodologies and procedures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in informatics and "big data," with demonstrated experience navigating projects that involve data sharing across organizations.
A critical component of this role will be reviewing and editing protocols to ensure accuracy and consistency, along with interpreting and facilitating data use agreements. The successful candidate will serve as a bridge between researchers and technical experts, effectively communicating with data scientists and informatics specialists to ensure project needs are clearly understood and met. Strong project management and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently while balancing multiple priorities in a dynamic research environment.
This position is part-time, 50%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
Key Job Responsibilities- Conduct literature reviews, prepare reports and materials, co-author publications, and disseminate information to appropriate entities.
- Develop and implement increasingly complex research methodologies, procedures, and criteria.
- Collect and analyze increasingly complex research data, conduct experiments and interviews, and document results according to established policies and procedures.
- Assist in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding.
- Train individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area.
- Review and edit protocols to ensure accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency.
School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Surgery, WiSOR
The Wisconsin Department of Surgery is one of the leading surgical programs in the nation, excelling in patient care, surgical education, and surgical research. We are composed of more than 130 full-time faculty across 10 divisions and nearly 200 additional staff who support our mission. Our surgeons perform almost 20,000 operations per year for pediatric and adult patients. Training the next generation of surgeons and clinician-scientists is integral in our department, with more than 100 residents and fellows trained each year.
The department is consistently among the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, ranking seventh nationally in NIH funding over the last 10 years.
The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR) is seeking a Researcher II to join our rapidly growing program. WiSOR is a health services research program within the Department of Surgery with approximately 20 faculty and 25 research staff. WiSOR supports a wide variety of outcomes-focused research, including health care disparities research, comparative effectiveness research, patterns of care, and performance and safety in surgical care.
CompensationThe starting salary for the position is $60,000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications- Project management experience.

- Experience on projects requiring data sharing across organizations.
