Job Summary
One field technician is needed to conduct field work for a bioacoustics research project at survey sites throughout Humboldt County, CA. This monitoring program will use autonomous recording units (ARUs) to survey marbled murrelets, an endangered species of seabird that nests in coastal old-growth forest stands. The project focuses on developing acoustic methods for monitoring murrelets, providing a cost‑effective and accurate means of detection through passive acoustic monitoring.
Start and end dates are ideally March 1st – August 22nd (with minimal flexibility), with a typical 40‑hour workweek. Field housing is provided. Schedules will vary with weather and include a mix of field and office work.
Key Responsibilities- Review and summarize data for presentations and reports.
- Perform lab and field tests in accordance with established research protocols.
- Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment and supplies.
- Collect data and monitor test results per research requirements.
- Assist with literature reviews and report writing as needed.
Required:
- Demonstrated ability to hike multiple miles carrying a heavy pack in occasionally steep terrain.
- Experience navigating unfamiliar terrain using maps and GPS.
- Experience following established field protocols.
Preferred:
- Experience safely operating 4‑wheel‑drive vehicles on unmaintained, backcountry roads.
- Ability to take accurate field notes and manage data electronically.
- Experience working solo in remote conditions and familiarity with ARUs or other bioacoustics technologies.
Bachelor’s degree in wildlife or a related field, or multiple seasons of equivalent field experience.
