Position Overview

Vallen is currently seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Occupational Health and Safety Technician, with a heavy focus in industrial hygiene, to help ensure a safe and compliant work environment. This role involves conducting inspections, analyzing workplace conditions, and supporting the implementation of health and safety programs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Exposure Monitoring
    • The Technician will be responsible for the completion of sampling surveys as outlined by the area Industrial Hygiene Advisor.
    • Assigned surveys will be structured to include the Site, Similar Exposure Group, Sub-Similar Exposure Group, Agent / Agent Group, required number of samples, and relevant due dates for sample collection, laboratory analysis, data entry, and availability of results in the Cority Industrial Hygiene Data Management System.
    • All samples will be collected according to relevant NIOSH/OSHA/ISO analytical method or generally accepted Industrial Hygiene Practices and guidelines.
    • Samples may include personal air samples for metals (NIOSH 7300), respirable crystalline silica (NIOSH 7500), diesel particulate matter (NIOSH 5040), surface wipe metals (SW-846 Method 3050

      B), legionella (SM 9260J).
    • The Technician will be responsible for direct observation of employees performing work tasks during sampling events to ensure validity of sample conditions and work activities. Where direct observation is not possible, accurate worklogs must be collected to document conditions present during sampling events.
    • Investigation of instrument data logs may be necessary to identify instrument performance information that may require a sample to be voided.
  • Industrial Hygiene Monitoring Equipment Management
    • The Industrial Hygiene team maintains an inventory of sampling equipment and instrumentation for assigned sampling/monitoring surveys.
    • Accurate, documented evidence of daily instrument calibrations where required.
    • Ensure annual equipment calibrations are completed on schedule and certificates of factory calibrations are received from OEM or certifying laboratory and maintained in Cority.
    • Identification of instruments experiencing calibration drift requiring factory repair or calibration.
    • Support troubleshooting and exchange of real‑time gas detectors under a service contract with Industrial Scientific.
  • Laboratory

    Requisition s and Analysis
    • Air samples collected for Metals, Silica, and Surface Metals will be submitted to the Central Laboratory for analysis. The Central Lab is an AIHA accredited laboratory employing NIOSH 7300 and 7500 methods.
    • Other collected air samples (e.g., diesel particulate matter, asbestos, legionella) will be submitted to an accredited third‑party laboratory per the Industrial Hygiene Advisor's instructions.
  • Confined Space Monitoring Equipment Management
    • The technician supports field and office duties for confined space monitoring equipment, calibration, gas replacement, and docking stations as required.
