AI Engineer

Nu Image® is building a new in-person office in the Mahwah / Wyckoff area of New Jersey, and this AI Engineer role is a founding member spot. You’ll work directly with the CTO to design and ship AI agent-driven development and production code for a US telehealth company, with security, privacy, and reliability treated as core requirements from day one.

This is hands-on work: you’ll review the code agents generate, read the diffs line by line, debug and fix issues by hand, and get to ship what actually works. If you like improving systems in real time and turning ideas into production, this role is built for that.

• Own AI engineering and hands-on code development from architecture through shipped implementation.
• Understand the full system
  , review every line the agents write, and fix by hand when output is wrong.
• Verify agent output with tests first, diff-by-diff review, and no reliance on “looks right.”
• Fix production issues instead of deflecting when something breaks because of agent-generated changes.
• Improve continuously
  : fix problems you see, and build better approaches when they’re clear wins.
• Build a modern web platform and internal tools that people enjoy using.
• Create integrations and automation that connect systems and reduce busywork.
• Deliver AI-powered workflows
  , including agent setups, guardrails, and review steps so a small core can build effectively.
• Ship secure, reliable, well-tested systems with healthcare-grade privacy and security baked in.
• Collaborate with the CTO on architecture and priorities, then translate decisions into working code.
• Run agents in parallel on branches, review diffs, push back on bad code, and write tricky parts yourself.
• Turn good ideas into prototypes via whiteboard sessions and iterative experimentation.
• Debug deeply using logs, queries, a debugger, and persistence.
• Spot and handle unasked-for improvements such as slow queries, flaky jobs, or tools that save hours.
• Communicate outcomes by sharing what shipped, what broke, and what you want to try next.

• Daily experience shipping with AI coding agents such as Cursor
  , the Grok ecosystem (including Grok Bot
  ), and similar tooling, with a setup you can explain and defend.
• Staying current with how AI tools change month to month.
• Hands-on experience with agent workflows
  : task breakdown, parallel agents, prompt and orchestration, and review loops that prevent bad output from shipping.
• A test-first approach to verification, reading diffs line by line and not trusting superficial correctness.
• The discipline to keep sensitive data (customer information, secrets, credentials) out of prompts, logs, and unapproved tools.
• The ability to build and debug without AI when needed, including reading unfamiliar code, stepping through it, and fixing by hand.
• Solid software architecture judgment and the ability to explain design choices and foresee how agent-driven designs might cause future issues.
• Strong PHP and Laravel
  : queues, jobs, scheduler, events, and Eloquent without N+1 issues.
• Real SQL skills (MySQL): schema design, indexing, migrations, reading query plans, and writing queries directly.
• Practical debugging ability
  : logs, stack traces, Xdebug (or similar), reproducing issues, and tracing root causes.
• Security and privacy best practices
  : authentication and authorization, input validation, encryption, least privilege, OWASP top risks, and secrets handling.
