Purpose of the Role
This role supports the Southern Region, working closely with the Operations team to manage and oversee all commercial aspects of projects-from tender handover through delivery to completion. You'll provide commercial insight and advice to Project Managers and Engineers while ensuring strong commercial performance across the region.
Key Responsibilities
a) Contracting & Contract Finance
Solid understanding of NEC contracts and their various options.
Awareness of different forms of construction contracts and where they apply.
Support Project Managers and Operations Managers in meeting contractual obligations across all projects.
Assess variation costs and negotiate agreement with stakeholders.
Interpret and advise on contractual implications.
Prepare regular financial progress updates and anticipated final account forecasts.
Conduct value management and oversee cost control throughout project life cycles.
b) Project Quantity Surveying
Draft and review Compensation Events (Changes).
Manage Change Accounts, particularly on larger or more complex projects.
Oversee NEC Early Warning Notice processes and ensure adherence to timescales.
Work proactively with Project Managers and Regional Operations Managers to protect cashflow.
Support payment applications and ensure accurate, timely certification.
Ensure effective administration of contracts.
Attend client meetings to represent and protect the business's commercial interests.
Assist clients, internal teams, and third parties with commercial queries.
c) Risk Management & Subcontracting
Contribute to feasibility studies for potential work items.
Identify, analyse, and develop responses to commercial risks.
Allocate work to subcontractors and suppliers, managing associated risks and costs.
Support debt management efforts using contractual and legal frameworks.
Assist with disputes and claims, coordinating with internal advisory teams where required.
d) General Responsibilities
Support administrative tasks including data entry, spreadsheet management, and document tracking.
Maintain accurate project filing and substantiated records for audit purposes.
Attend site and office meetings; take minutes when required.
Ensure compliance with Health & Safety requirements and work responsibly with regard to others.
Qualifications
Degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
Membership of RICS, CIOB, or ICES (or actively working toward full membership).
Competencies
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Effective problem-solving with sound commercial judgement.
Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
Ability to work independently and maintain accountability.
Ability to prioritise effectively under pressure.
High‑quality documentation and report‑writing capability.
Full, clean driving licence.
Strong interpersonal skills and confidence working with multiple stakeholders.
Competent in IT systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Essential Experience
Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Quantity Surveyor.
Degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
Desirable Experience
Knowledge of the construction industry and ground investigation projects.
Proficiency in NEC3 / NEC4 contracts.
Mandatory Training
Online Health & Safety training modules (provided and funded by employer).
