We are looking for an engaging and enthusiastic Functional Skills Teacher to join our supportive and learner-focused team. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference by delivering high-quality Maths and English Functional Skills from Entry Level through to Level 2, helping learners develop not only essential academic skills but also the confidence and resilience needed to succeed beyond the classroom.

You'll work with learners from a variety of backgrounds, many of whom may have faced challenges in education. Through creativity, encouragement, and high-quality teaching, you will create an environment where every learner feels valued, supported, and motivated to achieve their full potential.

The Role

As a Functional Skills Teacher, you will be responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering engaging lessons that inspire learners and promote outstanding progress. You will tailor your teaching to meet individual learning needs, using a range of teaching strategies to ensure every learner has the opportunity to succeed.

Working as part of a collaborative education team, you will monitor learner progress, provide constructive feedback, and implement effective interventions where required. You will encourage learners to develop independence, confidence, and employability skills while maintaining high expectations for behaviour, attendance, and achievement.

Creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment will be central to your role. You'll build positive relationships with learners, helping them overcome barriers to learning while promoting wellbeing, respect, and personal development throughout their educational journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths and/or English lessons from Entry Level to Level 2.
  • Differentiate learning to meet a wide range of abilities and learning styles.
  • Assess learner progress through formative and summative assessment, providing timely and meaningful feedback.
  • Develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and implement targeted interventions to maximise learner achievement.
  • Foster an inclusive and positive classroom environment where learners feel safe, respected, and motivated.
  • Effectively manage behaviour using positive and restorative approaches.
  • Monitor attendance, progress, and achievement, maintaining accurate learner records.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and wider support teams to ensure learners receive the support they need to succeed.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of your work.

About You

We're looking for someone who is passionate about education and committed to helping learners achieve outcomes they may never have thought possible. You'll be an adaptable and resilient professional who can inspire learners while maintaining high standards of teaching and classroom management.

You will have:

  • Excellent behaviour management skills with the ability to create positive learning environments.
  • The ability to differentiate teaching to meet individual learner needs and support learners with varying abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to build positive relationships with learners, colleagues, parents/carers, employers, and external agencies where appropriate.
  • The resilience and emotional intelligence to respond effectively to challenging situations while maintaining professionalism and empathy.
  • A genuine commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and learner wellbeing.
