Test Engineer
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Tester (Railway Signalling) to join our Testing & Commissioning team. Reporting directly to the Testing & Commissioning (T&C) Manager, you’ll play a key role in the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of signalling testing activities across major rail projects.
The Principal Tester is a senior technical authority within the testing function, responsible for ensuring all works are carried out to the highest standards of safety, quality and Network Rail compliance. This role also offers the opportunity to mentor testing teams and influence project delivery from planning through to commissioning.
LocationDepending upon experience and suitability, the successful applicant would be free to work remotely, on a hybrid basis, or from one of Amaro’s two main offices in Maidstone or Stevenage.
Key roles and responsibilities- Leading and delivering signalling testing activities in accordance with Network Rail standards (e.g., /L2/SIG/30014)
- Reviewing and validating test specifications, design documentation, and test records
- Overseeing functional, integration and commissioning testing on both renewals and enhancements projects
- Ensuring safety, quality, and compliance across all testing stages
- Liaising with the Tester in Charge, Project Engineers, and Design teams to resolve technical issues
- Supporting the development and competence of Testers, Assistant Testers, and Test Assistants
- Producing accurate testing documentation, reports, and sign off records
- Valid IRSE Licence as Principal Tester (1.3.190) or working towards
- Extensive experience in signalling testing across operational rail projects
- Strong understanding of Network Rail signalling principles, standards, and procedures
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure within possession and blockade environments
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety and quality
- PTS
- Full, UK driving license
- Leadership and management qualities and experience
- Team building skills and understanding
- Able to manage teams in a safety critical workspace
- Office 365 competent particularly Excel, Outlook and Teams
- Experience in ETCS, SSI, SMARTLOCK, WESTLOCK, or other modern interlocking systems
- Background in major commissioning works or multi-disciplinary projects
- Additional IRSE licences (e.g., Tester in Charge, functional tester)
- Competence in reading and interpreting complex signalling designs
- Ability to mentor and develop junior testing staff
- Up to 33 days of paid holiday per year (pro rata)
