Position: University Student Assistant - SSC Peer Tutor - Tutoring Services (Fall 2025 - Spring 2026)
Location: East Machias

Overview

Department: Academic Support and Success

Salary: $10.00 per hour (Max 26 hours per week)

Position Summary: Provides tutoring to individuals and small groups in the Student Success Center (SSC) located in the Houston Cole Library, 2nd floor. The SSC tutoring program is CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certified. If hired, students are expected to complete 10 hours of training. This position assists students in improving academic achievement, supports students by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and provides useful study skills to students who need supplemental help.

Additionally, peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge and serve as a model for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that successful learners employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks. Tutors may also provide drop-in tutoring assistance to students based on requests for academic assistance.

Tutors must possess knowledge of subject area material beyond a basic level; have excellent communication skills; the ability to provide an active learning experience for students by explaining difficult concepts and providing examples for explorations. Other assistance might include reviewing class material and discussing the text and course content.

Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs. Adheres to all department and University policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Attend mandatory tutor training and required workshops.
  • Attend all tutoring sessions and notify the Tutor Coordinator if a session must be cancelled.
  • Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing any notes, handouts, and/or textbook assignments.
  • Be punctual, begin all sessions promptly, use the time for academic tasks, and focus on the student’s needs.
  • Complete tutorial reports reflective of the content and objectives accomplished during each session.
  • Complete biweekly electronic timesheets.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding academic progress and/or personal information concerning students.
  • Additional duties as required by the department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3.0 college GPA or higher required; must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher throughout employment.
  • Must have earned an A or B in all courses tutored.

  • Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance at JSU.
  • Must be willing to tutor during the evening hours and during times that do not conflict with a tutor’s class schedule.
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. *)
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU).
