The Summer Camp is a nonprofit, residential summer camp for urban and rural girls ages 7-18 from low-income families and foster care, offering a safe, inclusive environment to build lifelong skills through fun, challenging, and educational experiences with positive role models. We celebrate the diversity of our campers and staff, and donor support provides a full campership for every girl, every summer.
RoleSummary
The Assistant Director/Outreach Coordinator is a year-round role reporting to the Executive Director, full-time June-August, part-time (20 hrs/week) September-May. The role keeps families and campers connected between summers, supports staff recruitment and training, prepares for the season, and helps with the day-to-day running of camp. The AD must live on campus in Readfield, Maine, from June 1st - August 20th and work remotely in the off-season.
SummerSeason:
Program & Operations
- Support staff and camper behavior management using a strengths-based approach
- Assist with daily camp operations: food service, program, supervision, transportation, and health care
- Coordinate camper and staff travel logistics
- Assist with Federal Food Program record-keeping
Scheduling & Coordinating
- Build session, bunk, and cabin lists each session, balancing cabin ages
- Facilitate mid-session camper evaluations and birthday cards
- Coordinate end-of-session "See Office" turnover
- Coordinate Katie, Joey & Poppy Award voting
- Run background checks on all summer staff via the camp's background check vendor and file completed records
- Run driver history (MVR) checks for staff who drive
- Maintain the staff phone list
- Build Outreach lists of incoming junior and senior high campers and counselors each session
- Maintain connections with staff, junior counselors, and CITs
- Communicate with Outreach campers year-round (mostly evenings and after school)
- Plan off-season gatherings, college tours, and leadership workshops for CITs and counselors
- Assist with reviewing camper applications
- Assist in hiring and training summer staff
- Prior camp, youth program, or leadership experience strongly preferred
- Strong organizational skills; comfortable with scheduling, records, and admin work
- Comfortable with basic office tools and Google Sheets
- Valid driver's license
- Genuine alignment with the mission and comfort with trauma-informed situations
- Able to work extended, irregular hours during camp, including evenings and overnights
- Willing to pass background checks and serve as a mandated reporter under Maine law
- Comfortable working independently and with camp leadership and counseling staff
$40,000 annually plus health insurance and two weeks paid vacation; full-time June-August, part-time (20 hrs/week) September-May, with housing provided June-August.
