Overview

WSP is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineering Manager for our Merrimack, NH office. The candidate will be involved in projects with the Geotechnical Engineering Team as part of the Earth & Environment Group. The position is full-time in Merrimack, NH, with in-person or hybrid schedule. Alternative office locations include Eliot, ME;
Portland, ME;
Chelmsford, MA;
Worchester, MA; or Boston, MA.

Responsibilities
  • Provide senior geotechnical/geological engineering review and technical assistance for evaluations, design, report preparation, contract document development, and construction of projects involving soil and rock mechanics; geohazards; soil/structure interaction; subsurface exploration and field testing programs; laboratory testing; geophysical methods; foundations for transportation structures; slope stability; retaining walls, excavation support systems, dewatering systems, instrumentation systems, pavement systems and earthwork operations.
  • Oversee data collection and analysis from field work, soil/rock samples, surveys and LiDAR, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, and other project data for development, design, and construction.
  • Apply advanced geotechnical techniques to identify improvements across project phases, including concept development, preliminary design, final design, design/build partnerships, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and update layouts in coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Manage design and construction of infrastructure projects from proposal to completion, including rehabilitation, grading, drainage, foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, and earth support systems.
  • Lead the development and implementation of advanced technologies and modeling approaches to ensure safety and functionality of end-users and transportation systems, aligned with geotechnical design standards.
  • Lead larger-scale geotechnical/geological projects, manage budgets, track hours and expenses, supervise subcontractors and staff, and ensure performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on multi-disciplinary projects and assist with engineering review of permits, plans, contracts, and inspections to ensure regulatory compliance and sound engineering practice.
  • Engage with public or private entities to discuss engineering challenges and programs; prepare and review technical documents, including drawings, specifications, calculations, and cost estimates, ensuring clarity of findings and recommendations.
  • Develop data visualizations and reports to interpret findings and support decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain a client base for high-level geotechnical services and identify business development opportunities.
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring, and training to junior staff and stay current with geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Participate in national and regional client programs and contribute to business planning and marketing strategies.
  • Support recruitment and regional technical needs in collaboration with senior colleagues; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies; perform additional duties as needed.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or geological engineering with a geotechnical focus.
  • 10+ years of relevant post-education experience in geotechnical/geological engineering and design.
  • Engineer licensure in one or more New England states or ability to obtain multi-state comity.
  • Knowledge of engineering and geologic research techniques and protocols.
  • Ability to coordinate with clients, colleagues, and third-party groups; strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office and geotechnical software; strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead a team to meet business objectives; self-leadership with multitasking and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
