GENERAL PURPOSE
Assists in performing a variety of entry-level, semi-skilled duties in maintaining parks and city-owned building grounds including sprinklers, turf, trees, trails, ball fields, and hard surfaces.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close to general supervision of the Parks Manager or assigned Lead Parks Technician(s).
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides immediate to close supervision to seasonal and temporary staff.
Essential Functions
Assists in performing daily maintenance of outdoor grounds facilities, park sites, park buildings, and restrooms (cleaning and replacing paper products, lawns, and garden plots by power trimming and mowing; cleaning and removing trash and debris from outdoor recreation sites and preparing recreation areas for public use; performs grounds and play equipment construction; performs daily maintenance of irrigation; uses electronic devices and programs to manage sprinklers and thermostats).
Operates various pieces of equipment including commercial mowers, tractor-drawn equipment, trimming and mowing equipment, backhoe, skid-steer, wheeled loader, and dump trucks.
Maintains, lubricates, and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
Installs sprinkling systems; repairs water lines; monitors watering schedules; repairs plumbing; repairs and replaces minor electrical components such as circuit breakers, GFCIs, and wiring; repairs drinking fountains and leaky valves; maintains stock of repair parts; prunes and removes trees and other plants; beautifies landscape areas; creates new landscapes; seeds and sods; applies chemicals for weed control in turf and open spaces;
winterizes water lines; shovels and sweeps snow to clear parking areas and walkways.
Performs small construction projects including building repairs and small concrete work; cleaning, securing, and monitoring equipment/facilities; making repairs to equipment/facilities; assists with minor plumbing, carpentry, and basic repair.
Operates powered equipment such as trimmers, edgers, tractors, dump trucks, snow blowers, snow plows, chain saws, sod cutters, chippers, etc. Loads and unloads equipment and supplies necessary to complete assignments; keeps track of inventory and supplies used.
Assists in mixing and spraying or spreading fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
Responds to emergency calls and performs as an “on-call” technician as required.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience:
- Sufficient education and experience to demonstrate an aptitude and ability to perform above and related duties; AND
- No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of horticulture, planting, cultivating, pruning, and general care for plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers; application of pesticides, fertilization, and soil amendments; drainage control; sprinkler system operation and maintenance; maintenance of groundskeeping equipment; reading of landscape drawings and blueprints.
Skill in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment including snow plow/salt spreader, track hoe, front-end loader, backhoe, bobcat, Kubota, trenching machine, welding equipment, etc.
Ability to work weekends and holidays when needed; maintain safe working conditions; respond effectively and make responsible decisions in emergency situations; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain good working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public; perform manual or strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess or acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and submit to random drug testing.
Must become a certified commercial pesticide applicator.
Workers are generally required to work outdoors in all seasonal extremes requiring muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, crawling, and lifting (up to 25-100 pounds). Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to performing required job functions. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required. Employees may be exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals;
risk of electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
