Swim Head Coach - Massabesic Middle School

Regional School Unit 57 is seeking a Swim Head Coach to lead the school’s swim program. This position is part of the school’s athletic department.

Reports To

The Athletic Director, who provides overall objectives and conducts the final evaluation in conjunction with the appropriate school principal(s).

Supervises

When applicable, advises, coordinates, and supports assistant and middle school coaching staff in collaboration with the Athletic Director and respective principal.

Job Goal

To instruct student‑athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. The coach will also promote character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment, while continuously upgrading professional knowledge through clinics, observations, and consultation.

Qualifications
  • Ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive athletic program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of swimming, with a commitment to ongoing professional learning and the application of new theories and best practices.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for student‑athletes through professional conduct, instruction, and leadership.

Program Oversight
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by RSU 57 and ensures their consistent implementation.
  • Understands and enforces system, state, and league regulations, interpreting them clearly for staff and athletes.
  • Follows the proper administrative chain of command and attends required meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
  • Establishes and communicates the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught within the program.
  • Trains and supports coaching staff and encourages professional growth through approved clinics and development opportunities.
  • Delegates duties, supervises implementation, and evaluates staff effectiveness at the conclusion of the season.
  • Maintains discipline, addresses grievances, and promotes morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and preparation for meets and special events.
  • Coordinates facility use and works with maintenance and school staff to ensure readiness for practices and events.
  • Maintains required documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Ensures proper care, maintenance, and security of assigned equipment and facilities.
  • Recommends policy, procedural, or program improvements to the Athletic Director.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor, promoting character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitors and supports student‑athletes’ academic performance and conduct.
  • Provides supervision and safeguards for student‑athletes during practices, competitions, and travel.
  • Communicates training rules and sport‑specific expectations to all participants.
  • Implements procedures for injury prevention, medical care, and emergency response.
  • Completes and submits injury reports within 24 hours when required.
  • Directs and supervises student managers and assistants.
  • Enforces discipline in accordance with due process and communicates with parents as necessary.
  • Supports student‑athletes with future educational or athletic planning when appropriate.
Finance and Equipment
  • Participates in budgeting by identifying program needs and operating within approved allocations.
  • Maintains accountability for all equipment, including inventory, storage, issuance, and reconditioning.
