Performs basic social services casework; identifies client needs for more intensive casework services and provides referrals; carries a caseload of moderately difficult cases; manages a caseload of increasingly difficult cases; and performs other related work as assigned.
Social Worker IWorking under close supervision, Social Worker I is the entry/trainee class in the professional Social Worker series. Employees learn casework methods, procedures, policies and training, carry a limited non‑complex caseload under close supervision, and receive in‑service training. Typical assignments are within child welfare and adult services programs; some positions may be assigned to employment services as needed.
Social Worker IIWorking under general direction, Social Worker II carries a full caseload of moderately difficult cases requiring greater skill. Typical assignments are within child welfare and adult services programs. Employees work with a high degree of independence in administering services and using agency or community resources.
Social Worker IIIUnder general direction, Social Worker III carries a difficult caseload and performs specialized casework functions, including consultation and leadership roles. Advanced casework includes complex situations involving child or adult protection, court investigations, and specialized functions.
Social Worker IVUnder general direction, Social Worker IV performs advanced casework involving complex individual and family problems, intensive treatment and counseling. Requires a Master’s degree and significant experience.
Supervision Exercised and Received- Social Worker I/II – Direct supervision from a Social Worker Supervisor or higher.
- Social Worker III – General direction from a Social Worker Supervisor or higher; may act as lead worker.
- Social Worker IV – May provide lead direction to lower level Social Workers.
- Conduct client interviews in home, office, or via telephone.
- Evaluate safety of children and adults; determine treatment methods.
- Assess suspected abuse; provide information to law enforcement.
- Develop culturally sensitive treatment plans.
- Refer clients to staff or community resources; advocate for services.
- Assist clients in accessing resources and interpreting policies.
- Prepare case records and communicate decisions.
- May testify in court; perform in‑service training.
- Maintain client confidentiality and adhere to NASW Code of Ethics.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Carry caseload with moderate difficulty.
- Provide counseling, crisis intervention, and program eligibility determinations.
- Mentor staff and orient new employees.
- Handle difficult cases requiring technical competence.
- Investigate suspected abuse; provide law enforcement information.
- Conduct case studies, develop treatment plans, and record court reports.
- Lead small teams and consult on advanced cases.
- Consult on legal, medical, and psychological reports.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethics compliance.
- Assess complex problems and design intensive treatment plans.
- Consult on advanced counseling and protective services.
- Investigate child and adult welfare cases and perform court reporting.
- Evaluate foster and adoptive parenting and coordinate services.
- Maintain case records; perform data entry and analysis.
- Lead and supervise lower-level workers.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with NASW Code of Ethics.
- Principles and practices of organization, workload and time management.
