Position: Teacher of English at British Council

Role Overview

Responsibilities
  • Deliver lessons to the highest standards of English Language Teaching, ensuring each session reflects best practice and supports learner progress.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging lessons tailored to diverse learner groups, taking into account individual learning styles, preferences and goals.
  • Ensure all teaching aligns with British Council Global Teaching Standards and consistently meets organisational expectations.
  • Monitor student progress, provide regular feedback and encourage learner autonomy to support achievement and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and enhance courses, materials and services, supporting wider operational and promotional activities.
  • Maintain excellent communication with students and deliver high‑standard customer service, while completing administrative duties with professionalism and accuracy.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain high teaching standards and support best practice in English Language Teaching.
  • Promote the British Council’s cultural relations mission by fostering intercultural understanding and creating opportunities for students to engage with UK culture.
  • Build positive relationships with customers and colleagues, ensuring full compliance with safeguarding, data protection, equality, diversity and inclusion, and health and safety policies.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Essential:
    University degree or equivalent.
  • Language proficiency:
    Near‑native English; CEFR C2 / IELTS Academic 8.0+ in all four skills.
  • CAMBRIDGE CELTA / Trinity Certificate / TESOL (TEFLi) or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years post‑certificate experience (TEFLi) or equivalent to 1,200 hours.
  • Experience teaching relevant age groups (specify by centre):
    • Early Years (aged 2 to
      5) – 400+ hours
    • Primary (aged 6 to 10) – 400+ hours
    • Lower Secondary (aged 11 to 14) – 800+ hours
    • Upper Secondary (aged 15 to 17) – 400+ hours
    • University/Vocational (aged 18 to 25) – 400+ hours
    • Adults / General English (18+) – 800+ hours
  • Desirable:
    Recognised diploma in EFL (e.g., DELTA / Trinity Diploma – TEFLq).
  • Specialism where appropriate (e.g., YL qualification: TYLEC or equivalent, PGCE / BEd in Primary or relevant subject).
Important Information
  • Location:

    Bahrain, close to the capital city, residential area. Teacher will work from the teaching centre.
  • Contract hours: 37.5 contracted hours, inclusive of 24 hours of teaching.
  • Working days: 5 days a week, with some weekend work.
  • Contract type:
    Fixed‑term full‑time position.
  • Salary: 776 – 950 BHD per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Right to work:
    Candidates must have legal right to live and work in Bahrain.
  • Background screening:
    All successful candidates are obliged to undergo comprehensive background screening.
  • Closing date: 10th July 2026.
Benefits
  • Annual paid leave: 35 days plus 14 public holidays per year.
  • Covered under the terms of the current local medical insurance scheme (staff and dependents under 18).
  • Eligible for an accommodation allowance (depending on status).
  • If recruited from outside Bahrain, the British Council will pay economy‑class air fares from your home country to Bahrain at the start of the contract.
