Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site Storage Tank Inspection Engineer role based in Abu Dhabi. The engineer will perform routine and scheduled inspections of storage tanks, overseeing visual examinations, non-destructive testing, and verification of compliance with relevant codes, standards, and client specifications. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing inspection plans, coordinating testing activities, documenting findings, issuing technical reports, and recommending corrective or preventive actions.

The role involves close collaboration with mechanical and electrical engineering teams, operations personnel, and quality control specialists to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient tank operations. The engineer will also support continuous improvement initiatives, contribute to risk assessments, and assist in root cause analyses related to equipment integrity and performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct site inspections of API 650 storage tanks to gather all required dimensional data.
  • Measure and record critical tank parameters including:
  • Tank diameter, height, and shell course details
  • Roof type (fixed or floating) and structural configuration
  • Pontoon dimensions and layout (if applicable)
  • Gauge pole, rolling ladder, and appurtenance locations
  • Leg sizes, spacing, and sleeve conditions
  • Existing sealing systems and drain arrangements
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, sketches, and marked-up drawings for engineering use.
  • Identify and document any irregularities, damages, interferences, or deviations from standard configurations.
  • Take clear photographic records of all relevant tank areas and components when allowed.
  • Coordinate closely with the Mechanical Engineering team to ensure all required data is captured.
  • Clarify site conditions and respond to engineering queries during the design phase.
  • Support the design process by providing practical input based on site observations.
  • Ensure all collected data is accurate, complete, and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Follow all site HSE requirements, including confined space and working at height procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in storage tank inspection, tank maintenance, or related fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with API 650 tanks and components is required.
  • Experience in oil & gas, tank farms, or petrochemical facilities is preferred.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer is preferred.
Specific

Skills:
  • Strong ability to take accurate field measurements using appropriate tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and tank layouts.
  • Familiarity with floating roof systems and tank internals.
  • Basic understanding of fabrication and installation constraints.
  • Proficiency in preparing inspection reports and freehand sketches (AutoCAD is a plus).
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong observation and documentation skills.
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Good communication skills with engineering teams and site personnel.
  • Problem-solving mindset and practical thinking.
Personal requirements:
  • Physically fit (not overweight)
  • No existing medical conditions.
  • Able to work at height.
  • Able to travel internationally to conduct inspections.
