JOB SUMMARY:

The School Nurse – Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) supports the health, safety, and well-being of students by providing school-based nursing services in accordance with applicable Virginia laws and regulations, Manassas Park City Schools policies and procedures, and established nursing protocols.

The LPN provides direct health services to students, responds to illnesses and injuries, administers medications and treatments as authorized, maintains required health records, communicates with parents/guardians and school staff, and assists in addressing student health needs that may affect participation in the educational program. The LPN works collaboratively with the Nursing Coordinator, school administrators, families, and other appropriate staff to support a safe and healthy school environment.

REQUISITE EDUCATION AND

SKILLS:

• Graduation from an approved practical nursing education program.
• Current and unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or eligibility to practice in Virginia through an applicable Nurse Licensure Compact privilege.
• Current CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain certification as required by the division.
• Previous nursing experience in a school, pediatric, community health, or similar health care setting preferred.
• Knowledge of practical nursing principles, first aid, medication administration, infection prevention, and emergency response procedures.
• Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to student illness, injury, and other health concerns within the LPN scope of practice.
• Ability to follow physician/provider orders, individualized health plans, emergency action plans, and established nursing protocols.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, staff, health care providers, and community partners.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, and staff.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and protect the confidentiality of student health and educational information.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

ESSENTIAL JOB

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

• Complies with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, Virginia Board of Nursing requirements, School Board policies and regulations, and division procedures.
• Provides nursing services within the authorized scope of practice for a Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse and under appropriate clinical direction and supervision.
• Assesses and responds to student illnesses, injuries, and health concerns and provides appropriate first aid and nursing care.
• Administers medications and prescribed treatments in accordance with authorized health care provider orders, parent/guardian authorization, applicable law, and division procedures.
• Recognizes medical emergencies, initiates appropriate emergency procedures, and activates emergency medical services when necessary.
• Monitors students with chronic or significant health conditions and assists with implementation of individualized health plans and emergency action plans.
