Job SummaryThe Clinical Unit Coordinator provides coordination of direct and indirect patient care at the hospital-wide level. Responsibilities include shift and unit operations, patient flow, personnel management, quality improvement, and direct and indirect patient care. The role requires initiative, flexibility, and professional accountability with minimal supervision. The coordinator supports care across neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations, mentoring staff in assessment, planning, and evaluation of outcomes, and maintaining regulatory readiness.
The incumbent mentors, teaches, and supports staff while aligning with department goals.
Major functions include, but are not limited to:
- Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs and patient flow.
- Demonstrates ASPIRE values in attitude and communication.
- Available for consultation to evaluate patient progress and assist in meeting quality indicators.
- Participates in rounds/huddles as applicable and responds quickly to changes in condition or treatment.
- Models the facility’s core values and supports staff satisfaction and engagement.
- Assists with staffing, scheduling, and unit goals; promotes staff development and shared governance.
- Serves as a clinical/operational resource and knowledge expert.
- Supports mentoring, teaching, and ongoing professional growth.
Patient Care:
Interviews and advises patients regarding health and illness prevention; synthesizes data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan; recommends community resources as needed.
Quality:
Collaborates with other departments to achieve quality outcomes; monitors core process quality and applies safety and infection control principles.
Communication:
Demonstrates strong interpersonal and team communication; participates in staff meetings and identifies process improvements from feedback.
The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications- Education: Completion of a nursing program approved by the State Board of Nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Experience: 2 years of experience in an acute care setting or specialized unit preferred. Refer to Life Support Training Policy for details.
- Licensure: Registered Nurse with current Virginia licensure.
- Additional Skills/Requirements: Ability to perform basic nursing skills on groups of patients, multitask and prioritize, administer medications using the five rights, communicate effectively, and use basic computer systems.
- Physical Demands: Medium to heavy physical demand; constant standing; ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs with Safe Handling Equipment when needed.
- On-call responsibilities as directed.
- Ability to travel between campus buildings and remote facilities as needed.
- May require safety equipment such as HEPA mask for infection prevention.
