JOB SUMMARY:

The JV Girls Head Basketball Coach is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and promoting a comprehensive girls’ junior varsity basketball program. The coach fosters a positive learning environment, emphasizes academic achievement, models ethical and professional behavior, and serves as a role model for student‑athletes. In addition, the coach collaborates closely with the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach to ensure programmatic alignment across all levels of the girls’ basketball program, supporting a unified vision for player development and team culture.

This position reports directly to the Director of Student Athletics and Activities.

REQUISITE EDUCATION AND

SKILLS:

  • MPCS staff are preferred
  • Knowledge and background in basketball
  • Previous coaching experience in basketball is preferred
ESSENTIAL JOB

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Organize and conduct tryouts, evaluating prospective athletes and encouraging participation in the girls’ basketball program.
  • Assess players’ skills, assign team positions, and make roster decisions for the junior varsity girls’ basketball team.
  • Develop and implement a regular practice schedule that builds fundamental skills, teamwork, and prepares players for game competition.
  • Collaborate with the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach to programmatic alignment in philosophy, strategies, and player development.
  • Work with the Athletic Director to schedule gym facilities for practices and home/away competitions.
  • Observe players during practices and games to identify areas for individual and team improvement.
  • Design and execute game strategies appropriate to the JV team’s skills and competitive level.
  • Supervise student‑athletes at all times, maintaining high standards of conduct, discipline, and sportsmanship.
  • Manage in‑game decisions including player substitutions, timeouts, and adjustments to strategy.
  • Follow established procedures in the event of player injury, ensuring immediate attention and proper reporting.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about expectations, team rules, schedules, and player development.
  • Uphold and enforce all rules and regulations of the Virginia High School League (VHSL), district, region, and Manassas Park City Schools.
  • Model sportsmanship and professional conduct in interactions with athletes, officials, and spectators.
  • Represent the JV girls’ basketball program positively at school and community events, including team banquets, awards nights, and pep rallies.
  • Maintain accurate records including eligibility forms, emergency cards, equipment inventory, and team statistics.
  • Teach athletes basketball fundamentals, team strategies, conditioning, and safety practices necessary for skill and program growth.
  • Foster a culture of pride, teamwork, and school spirit among student‑athletes and the broader school community.
  • Provide safe practice and game environments through supervision, equipment checks, and facility inspections.
  • Manage and account for basketball uniforms and equipment, including distribution, collection, and inventory.
  • Submit required paperwork (eligibility rosters, schedules, player information) on time to the Athletic Director and VHSL.
  • Support the recognition of players through awards programs and end‑of‑season celebrations.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to coaching and athletics.
  • Perform other basketball‑related duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the JV girls’ basketball program.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
