We are looking for a Structural Engineer with experience in high‑voltage substation projects (up to 500 kV) to join our Power Delivery team. The candidate will design structural and foundation components, collaborate with cross‑functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and uphold HDR’s quality and safety standards.
Responsibilities- Execute structural engineering tasks for substation members including rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded‑plate tubular steel shapes. Perform detailed design, calculations, and detailing for fabrication or draft loading and concept drawings for submittal to a steel fabricator.
- Execute foundation design tasks (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, etc.) using industry‑standard software.
- Prepare and/or review construction and material specifications.
- Assign project tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non‑structural team members.
- Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews of project deliverables per HDR’s Quality Management System (QMS).
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain design standards.
- Work independently and mentor/train one or more EITs and Designers.
- Execute multiple concurrent projects while collaborating with teams in different locations.
- Participate in project reviews as needed.
- Travel may be required.
- Technical design experience with the physical/outdoor design of high‑voltage switchyard and substation projects.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113 and other industry standards.
- Experience with industry standard design software: PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalents.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with substation foundation and steel structural design.
- Working knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318 and related standards.
- Self‑starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineering license (PE or P.Eng) recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position.
- Previous experience as a structural engineer.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar.
- Prior experience with an architectural/engineering or consulting firm.

The compensation range for this position is $90,682 - $145,990, depending on experience, education, and location.
