Job Summary: Includes three levels (YC I, YC II, YC III) with varying responsibilities and qualifications.
SummaryYC I: Provides a safe and secure environment for adjudicated or detained juveniles. Coordinates and supervises residents’ daily activities, monitors and assesses behavior, and upholds agency mission using practice model theories.
YC II: Same as YC I, plus participates as a member of the treatment team, helps develop and implement individual treatment plans, and assists in group and individual counseling.
YC III: Same as YC II, plus supervises subordinate Youth Counselors.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTSEach additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
Minimum Qualifications- Education/
Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent credential. - License/Certification:
Valid New Hampshire driver’s license required if responsible for transporting residents/students. - Other Requirements:
- Must be able to run, physically restrain youth, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Successfully complete mandatory physical fitness evaluation.
- Trainee Option:
Not applicable.
Experience working in organized group activities such as camp counseling, Boy or Girl Scouting, school or church programs, coaching sports, working with mentally and physically challenged youth and adults in school, daycare, hospital or correctional/rehabilitative settings or similar experiences.
After-Hire Requirements (YC I)Must successfully complete the Juvenile Justice Academy within twelve months of employment (Reg. 21‑1010 Counselors‑1, Youth Counselor I).
Career Advancement Opportunities (YC I)Criteria: BGA
01 (Youth Counselor to Level
2). Promotion requires satisfactory performance evaluation, no discipline, approval from Assistant House Leader, Treatment Coordinator, and Residential/Clinical Administrator, and complete case records.
YC I Responsibilities: Constant surveillance, inspecting for contraband, handling volatile situations, supervising recreational activities, monitoring behavior and medication, pursuing escaped residents, communicating with staff and external agencies, acting as positive role model, supervising off‑site appointments, complying with safety policies, operating surveillance equipment, participating in crisis response teams, completing annual training.
YC II Responsibilities: Same as YC I, plus participation in treatment plan development, conducting individual and family counseling under supervision, maintaining case records, supervising residents in employment prep, coordinating crisis response etc.
YC III Responsibilities: Same as YC II, plus supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate Youth Counselors, recommending personnel actions, and conducting therapeutic groups.
