Overview

The primary purpose of the Substance Abuse Therapist (Counselor) is to maintain patient care within the center by providing counseling services in accordance with policy, state, and federal regulations and procedures. The Therapist is an essential part of creating a safe and well-balanced environment for ReVIDA’s patients, and supports ReVIDA’s mission by treating the whole person and upholding our values. The position fosters a warm, personal, positive, and calm atmosphere when interacting with staff, patients, and visitors.

Job Type: Full-time.

Responsibilities
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team and assist in complex problem solving with patients; ability to work autonomously as needed.
  • Demonstrate excellent observation, good judgment, and strong communication skills; provide well-written documentation promptly.
  • Conduct assessments and utilize ASAM criteria for appropriate patient placement; participate in treatment plan development and implementation, service coordination, and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of local community drug trends and the effects on the body and cognitive functioning of drugs of abuse; recognize signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and the psychosocial implications of substance use disorders.
  • Understand the processes of addiction and treatment and have familiarity with social, economic, legal, medical systems; consider HIV transmission, health, behavioral, and emotional implications of addiction.
Supervision and Competency Evaluations
  • Supervision and competency evaluations are provided through facility monitoring activities, direct observation, staff meetings, in-services, management meetings, individual meetings, Employee Improvement Process, reporting, interactions, strategic planning, outcomes, and annual competency review.
Competencies
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and timely patient files; coordinate care of assigned patients and present patient status and concerns with the treatment team.
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and develop/implement patient treatment plans according to state OBOT regulations, CARF standards, and State Medicaid rules.
  • Provide clinical services, patient care, education, and opioid use disorder counseling services to patients receiving medications for opioid use disorder as part of a larger, comprehensive treatment plan.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions; provide patient advocacy and liaison services with community and regulatory agencies as needed; work with ReVIDA Care Coordinators to access housing, food, and other supports.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition to evaluate the treatment plan’s success and adapt as needed; assist in program evaluation and use toxicology results as a clinical tool rather than a punitive measure.
  • File patient paperwork into the chart and keep the patient’s electronic chart complete and updated; coordinate intake and ongoing assessment with medical professionals and the larger multidisciplinary team.
  • Document patient progress notes and ensure counseling frequencies and units are met per policy; obtain ongoing supervision by licensed professionals; manage stress and interact effectively with others.
  • Be present during working hours for in-person meetings and computer access per policy; conduct patient intake and orient patients to the program.
  • Compose interpretative summaries, transition plans, and discharge summaries for each patient; provide crisis intervention as needed; attend staff meetings and participate in counseling supervision and program development.
  • Support organizational and departmental philosophies and goals; communicate pertinent patient information to the Regional Clinical Director as required; maintain regular attendance and professional conduct.
  • Adhere to ReVIDA’s codes of conduct and service standards; interact with staff positively and in alignment with ReVIDA’s mission and values.
  • Perform all duties professionally and ethically and follow the NAADAC Code of Ethics and other applicable codes of ethics; other duties as assigned by leadership.
