Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Overview
Performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks in repair and maintenance of Dies and Molds. Work involves proficiency in several trades, with working conditions and level of supervision varying by location and assignment.
Responsibilities- Must know all safety requirements, departmental and plant wide.
- Maintain departmental 5-S for assigned areas and equipment.
- Complete required departmental paperwork. General knowledge of computer software and maintenance work order systems.
- Know all safety equipment and proper uses of them.
- Know proper transportation methods of all dies from departments to Die Shop.
- Safely and effectively use a crane.
- Welding and silver soldering to manage parting lines or fill areas; maintain surfaces to specified tolerances.
- Troubleshoot electrical problems on dies, fuses, thermocouples, Calrod heaters, band heaters, nozzle heaters; rewiring of electrical components; replace heaters; read voltage and resistance; address faulty plugs and broken wires/connectors.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic cylinders: seals, needles, leaky fittings, hydraulic lines; ensure hoses are correctly connected and gate operation; verify cylinder function.
- Troubleshoot water heating or cooling problems; clean passages, manage water lines; use acid washers to clean dies and clear passages.
- Understand the structure of each die and how parts work together (manifolds, nozzles, limit switches, pins, cylinders, blades, punches); replace or fabricate parts to meet tolerances.
- Problem solve emergencies (e.g., piercing dies when power fails) and safely separate dies/work punches as needed.
- Work with air components, cylinders, air jets, inserts; modify as necessary.
- Use shop equipment (lathe, end mill, surface grinder, taps and drills, files) to achieve best results.
- Fabricate jigs or parts using resins and other materials; assemble press plates and build up surfaces as needed.
- Complete projects promptly and correctly; operate across electrical, air, and hydraulic systems as required.
- Run dies after welding or setup to ensure proper operation across various die types (KPM, Injection Molding, Piercing, Rough Cut, Sonic Welding, Trunk Trim).
- Adjust and repair dies to ensure proper cutting, including shimming, welding, or straightening edges as needed.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas for self and others.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of Quality and Environmental Policies and Procedures.
- Authorities for an employee are granted by work instructions, policies and procedures and/or management direction to meet customer requirements.
- High School Graduate or GED.
- 1 - 2 years technical training or 2 - 3 years on-the-job training.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and practices used in electrical or mechanical areas.
- Ability to detect defects in machinery and perform repairs or adjustments.
- Ability to interpret sketches and prints.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk, see, or hear. The employee may occasionally sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move more than 40 lbs.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. Noise level is moderate to loud and within OSHA standards.
