We are looking for a reliable, well-organised individual with strong communication skills to join our busy GP practice in Salford as a Medical Receptionist. This is a key role at the front ofthe practice where you will be responsible for supporting patients and ensuring the smooth running of daily operations. You will be the first point of contact for patients,whether in person or over the phone, so professionalism, accuracy, and acalm manner are essential.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Receptionist plays a vital role in theday-to-day running of the practice.

Key responsibilities include:

  • .Greeting and assisting patients in person and by phone

    Booking, amending, and cancelling appointments using EMIS Web
  • Processing repeat prescription requests and liaising with
  • Registering new patients and updating patient records accurately

Managing incoming and outgoing communications (calls,emails, post)

  • .Assisting with patient queries and preparing documents for the clinical team
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality in line with NHSguidelines
  • Signposting patients to appropriate services when necessary
  • Providing cover for colleagues during absences and supporting general operations.
  • You will need to be confident using IT systems, able tomultitask, and comfortable working in a busy environment.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose:

To provide a high-quality, professional reception and administrative service to patients, doctors, and other members of the general practice team. The role involves being the first point of contact for patients, managing appointments, handling enquiries, and supporting the smooth running of the practice.

Key Responsibilities:
Reception Duties:

  • Greet patients and visitors in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly, deal with enquiries, and redirect calls as appropriate.
  • Make, cancel, and reschedule patient appointments using the clinical system (e.g., EMIS, System One, Vision).
  • Ensure the reception area is tidy and always welcoming.
  • Register new patients and process necessary paperwork.
  • Explain practice procedures and services to new and existing patients.
  • Handle requests for home visits, repeat prescriptions, and test results.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times, in line with GDPR and NHS policies.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Input and update patient information on the clinical system accurately.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail, including scanning documents into patient records.
  • Assist in maintaining stocks of forms and other stationery.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Provide cover for colleagues during absences, holidays, or busy periods.
Key Skills and Attribute
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong IT and data entry skills; experience with GP clinical systems desirable.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise workload, and remain calm under pressure.
  • Friendly, empathetic, and patient-focused approach.

Qualifications and

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a receptionist or customer service role (healthcare experience preferred).
  • Good standard of general education (GCSEs or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with NHS procedures and medical terminology is an advantage.
  • DBS clearance may be required.

Working Conditions:

  • Based in a busy GP practice environment.
  • May involve occasional Saturday or evening shifts.
  • Continuous patient interaction: a high degree of professionalism and emotional intelligence is required.
