Senior Quantity Surveyor
Location:
National role with flexible base location. Travel and site visits are part of the role. A full UK driving licence is required.
Senior Quantity Surveyor at Royal Mail will lead commercial and cost management activity from feasibility to final account. Responsibilities include shaping commercial strategy, supporting procurement decisions, managing financial performance and collaborating closely with internal teams and external partners.
- Leading commercial planning, governance and reporting across assigned projects, ensuring strong cost control from concept to completion.
- Preparing cost plans, estimates, tender documentation, bills of quantities and commercial evaluations for a wide range of construction and engineering schemes.
- Managing valuations, contractor applications, forecasting, cashflow and final accounts, ensuring accuracy and financial compliance.
- Driving value engineering and cost saving initiatives, identifying opportunities to optimise scope, reduce lifecycle cost and support in sourcing where appropriate.
- Providing clear commercial reporting covering cost to complete, forecast outturns, risks, opportunities and supply chain performance.
- Ensuring compliance with statutory and organisational governance, including procurement policies, audit requirements and relevant construction legislation (e.g., CDM 2015).
- Managing commercial and contractual risks through robust assessments and maintaining project risk registers.
- Building effective relationships with internal teams, contractors and suppliers, supporting negotiations and driving performance improvements.
- Strong commercial, financial and analytical skills, with experience managing multiple project budgets and delivering accurate cost plans, estimates and valuations.
- Solid knowledge of construction contracts (particularly JCT), commercial procedures, change control and dispute resolution.
- Understanding of construction methods, building services, procurement routes and market pricing, with strong negotiation capability.
- Experience across construction, engineering or client‑side environments, ideally spanning building fabric, M&E or industrial/logistics settings.
- A track record of managing commercial aspects of multiple projects of varied scale and complexity.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills.
- A proactive, solutions‑driven approach with strong attention to detail, governance discipline and the ability to influence at all levels.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external supply chain partners.
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
- Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) or working towards MRICS profession accreditation.
- CSCS card or equivalent H&S accreditation.
- IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
