Assistant Quantity Surveyor The Opportunity A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established and highly regarded construction and development business based in Ringwood, Hampshire. This is a slightly different opportunity to a traditional Assistant QS position, with the role offering the chance to get involved across both quantity surveying and procurement/buying. The business is open to candidates from either a Quantity Surveying or Buying background, particularly those who have an understanding of both disciplines and are keen to broaden their commercial experience.

You'll be joining a small, hands-on team and will have the opportunity to take on genuine responsibility across a varied portfolio of residential developments, care homes and refurbishment projects. Based from their headquarters in Ringwood, the business operates with a close-knit commercial and construction team, offering the opportunity to work closely with senior management and gain exposure across the full project lifecycle. Assistant Quantity Surveyor

The Role Working alongside the Commercial Manager, you will support the commercial management and procurement of projects from initial tender and procurement through to final account. The role would suit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor who enjoys getting involved in the buying and procurement side of construction, or an experienced Assistant Buyer looking to develop further into quantity surveying and commercial management.

You'll work closely with suppliers, subcontractors, site teams and the wider commercial team to help ensure projects are delivered efficiently, commercially and to programme. Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Key Responsibilities Supporting the commercial management of projects from procurement through to final account. Assisting with the procurement of subcontract packages, materials and services. Obtaining and negotiating competitive quotations. Assisting with tendering and preparing contract documentation. Processing orders, valuations, payments and variations. Monitoring project costs, budgets and expenditure. Supporting monthly cost reporting and commercial forecasting. Maintaining procurement schedules and commercial records.

Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors throughout the project lifecycle. Reviewing drawings, specifications and project information. Working with site teams to ensure materials and services are procured in line with programme requirements. Assisting with the management of variations and commercial changes. Attending project and commercial meetings. Developing strong working relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams. Undertaking regular site visits where required.

Ensuring company commercial and procurement procedures are followed. Assistant Quantity Surveyor About You We're looking for someone who is commercially aware, organised and keen to develop within a varied construction environment. You may currently be working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Assistant Buyer, Buyer or in another junior commercial/procurement position. The key requirement is someone who understands construction and is comfortable dealing with costs, suppliers, subcontractors and procurement.

You'll ideally have:
Previous experience within construction, quantity surveying, buying or procurement. An understanding of construction costs and commercial processes. Experience obtaining or negotiating supplier/subcontractor quotations. Strong communication and negotiation skills. Good organisational and time-management abilities. A proactive and commercially minded approach. Good IT skills, particularly with Excel and commercial systems. The ability to work independently while also contributing to a close-knit team.
