This is an exciting opportunity to manage inpatients with cancer.

The role involves the acute and day-to-day management of patients with cancer who are admitted to The Christie either due to acute illness, acute complications of their cancer or its treatment.

There is exposure to cutting-edge oncological therapies that are being delivered to patients.

There is also the opportunity to work closely with specialist oncologists in both the inpatient and outpatient management of patients with cancer.

There is access to an elective chemotherapy unit, a supportive oncology multidisciplinary team (including palliative care, specialist therapy, specialist nutrition and associated oncological specialities) an interventional procedures unit, acute assessment unit and specialist treatment services.

This job will lead to the development of an individual’s ability to manage patients with cancer, including oncological emergencies.

We are also a very quality improvement, education and research active site and a prospective employee will have the opportunity to partake in these activities.

Acute and day-to-day management of patients with cancer who are admitted to hospital (both elective and emergency). Support specialist oncology teams to deliver high-quality care to patients with cancer and to facilitate safe discharge from hospital.

Deliver empathic and excellent palliative care to patients in whom that is a key management priority.

Support the acute assessment unit.

Requirements for on call will be discussed take in educational activities for self-development on site.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year.

We are based in Manchester and serve a population of
3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services.

We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year.

Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This post forms part of a team of resident doctors who manage patients under the supervision of and with the support of senior oncology specialist teams.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide medical input to patients admitted to the acute assessment and inpatient wards at The Christie.

There will also be requirement to attend some outpatient clinics and specialist treatment units.

The post holder will be required to continue their own self-development as highlighted in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice framework which includes attending mandatory educational sessions organized by the clinical and educational directorates, governance meetings, partaking in risk management, portfolio management, annual appraisal.

There will be opportunities to partake in quality improvement, research and leadership activities.

All prospective junior oncology fellows will be appointed a clinical/educational supervisor who will support them during their work.

Continuing Professional Development The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
