SEMH Mental Health Support Worker – Trafford Full Time | Secondary School | Teaching Personnel

Teaching Personnel are recruiting a committed SEMH Mental Health Support Worker to join a specialist SEMH secondary school in the Trafford area. This is a full‑time position supporting young people aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, including anxiety disorders, trauma‑related behaviours, low self-esteem, attachment difficulties, and complex behavioural challenges. If you are passionate about helping young people overcome barriers and build brighter futures, this role is for you.

The Role

As an SEMH Mental Health Support Worker, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Helping students regulate emotions, develop coping strategies, and improve resilience.
  • Supporting behaviour management using trauma‑informed and restorative approaches.
  • Assisting teachers with personalised learning plans and classroom routines.
  • Creating a safe, calm, and supportive environment that fosters trust and engagement.
  • Implementing de‑escalation strategies and supporting crisis interventions where necessary.
  • Encouraging positive attitudes, self‑confidence, and healthy social interactions.
  • Collaborating with teachers, pastoral teams, and external agencies to safeguard and advocate for students.
✔️ Requirements

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Previous experience working with young people (not necessarily in a school).
  • An understanding of SEMH needs, trauma, and behaviour support strategies.
  • Strong communication, patience, and emotional resilience.
  • A proactive, compassionate, and non‑judgmental approach.
  • A willingness to complete safeguarding and behaviour training.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
Desirable but not essential:
  • Experience in youth work, psychology, sports coaching, counselling, care work, or similar fields.
  • Team Teach or other de‑escalation training.
