Behaviour Support Assistant – Secondary School based in South Manchester

We are working with a Secondary school in South Manchester who are seeking a proactive, resilient, and approachable individual to join our dedicated pastoral team as a Behaviour Support Assistant. This is a key role in promoting a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment through the consistent implementation of the school’s behaviour policy.

As a Behaviour Support Assistant you will be working closely with teaching and pastoral staff, the successful candidate will respond to behaviour incidents, provide practical intervention, and support pupils in making positive behaviour choices. You will play an active role in maintaining high standards of conduct across the school, acting as a visible presence and reinforcing expectations in line with the school’s values and ethos.

The Behaviour Support Assistant role combines both reactive and preventative approaches, addressing immediate behaviour concerns while identifying emerging issues and implementing strategies to minimise disruption to learning. You will provide guidance, mentoring, and informal coaching to pupils, helping them develop self-regulation, resilience, responsibility, and positive engagement in school life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of the school’s behaviour policy and pastoral procedures.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to behaviour incidents across the school.
  • Work with pupils to de-escalate situations and promote positive behaviour choices.
  • Provide targeted support and mentoring to pupils who require additional behavioural guidance.
  • Maintain a visible presence around the school during lessons, transitions, break times, and lunchtimes.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with pupils, staff, parents, and carers.
  • Record and monitor behaviour incidents accurately using school systems.
  • Work collaboratively with pastoral leaders, teachers, SEND staff, and external agencies where appropriate.
  • Assist with reintegration meetings, restorative conversations, and behaviour interventions.
  • Support pupils in developing strategies for self-regulation, emotional wellbeing, and engagement with learning.
  • Contribute to a safe, orderly, and respectful school environment.
Person Specification Essential
  • Experience of working with young people in an educational, youth work, pastoral, or support setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and resilient when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and establish appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also using initiative independently.
  • Good literacy, numeracy, and ICT skills.
Desirable
  • Experience of behaviour support, pastoral care, mentoring, or inclusion work.
  • Knowledge of restorative approaches and behaviour management strategies.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection responsibilities.
  • Experience of supporting pupils with additional needs, including SEND, SEMH, or attendance concerns.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, youth work, counselling, mentoring, or behaviour support.
