Fixed Term Contract

Salary:From £14,733.84 per annum, negotiable depending on experience (FTE £29,467.68).

About the Role

The STEP Alternative Provision Coordinator plays a key role in the day-to-day coordination and delivery of STEP, Gorse Hill Studios' creative alternative provision.

Working under the direction of the Head of Creative Learning & Engagement, the post holder will support young people who are disengaged from education by delivering high-quality, trauma-informed and personalised learning experiences. The role requires an experienced practitioner who can confidently coordinate provision, build positive relationships with young people, families, schools and professionals, and contribute to the continued development of the service.

The successful candidate will be organised, proactive and able to work independently, taking ownership of their responsibilities while contributing positively to the wider organisation. They will be committed to improving outcomes for young people through creative, person-centred and relationship-based practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the day-to-day delivery of the STEP Alternative Provision.
  • Plan, organise and coordinate individual timetables, learning programmes, interventions and enrichment activities.
  • Ensure sessions are appropriately prepared, staffed and resourced.
  • Monitor attendance, engagement and progress, responding proactively where concerns arise.
  • Support the ongoing development of STEP, contributing ideas that enhance the quality and effectiveness of the provision.
  • Ensure the learning environment remains safe, welcoming and conducive to learning.
  • Build positive, professional and trusting relationships with young people.
  • Deliver mentoring and personalised support that promotes engagement, wellbeing, resilience and positive outcomes.
  • Create a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment where young people can thrive.
  • Support young people to overcome barriers to learning using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
  • Promote positive behaviour, confidence, independence and personal development.
Curriculum and Learning
  • Support the planning and delivery of creative, engaging and personalised learning opportunities.
  • Deliver high-quality sessions that support young people's personal, social and educational development.
  • Support the delivery of Arts Award, AQA Unit Awards and other recognised accreditation where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations to broaden opportunities available to young people.
Partnership Working
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with schools, local authorities, families and external agencies.
  • Attend professional meetings relating to young people's progress and support plans where required.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with referrers, parents/carers and partner organisations.
  • Support young people through transitions into, within and beyond the provision.
Administration and Compliance
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, registers and case notes.
  • Complete monitoring information and required documentation within agreed timescales.
  • Record and report safeguarding concerns promptly in accordance with organisational procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, health and safety, GDPR and other organisational policies.
  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and reporting requirements where required.

Person Specification
  • Experience working within an Alternative Provision, education, youth work or similar setting supporting children and young people.
  • Experience of working with young people with SEND, SEMH or other additional needs.
  • Experience coordinating programmes, projects or educational provision.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload and work independently.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, professionalism and sound judgement.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with schools, families and multi-agency professionals.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and youth-centred practice.
  • Experience delivering Arts Award, AQA Unit Awards or other accredited learning.
