About this job

Sometimes they're measured in a smile, a first interaction, a new way of communicating or a moment of independence that seemed impossible just weeks before.

Educato is working in partnership with an exceptional specialist school in Cheetham Hill to recruit a Specialist Learning Support Assistant to support children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and complex additional needs.

This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to become part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team where every member of staff plays an important role in helping pupils communicate, develop confidence and achieve milestones that genuinely change lives.

This specialist SEN school has created an environment where every child is valued as an individual and every achievement is celebrated.

Purpose-built classrooms, sensory learning spaces and specialist resources enable pupils to access a personalised curriculum tailored to their unique strengths and needs.

Staff work collaboratively with therapists, teachers and families to ensure every pupil receives the support they need to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

Relationships are at the heart of everything they do, and you'll quickly become part of a welcoming, experienced and supportive team.

As a Specialist Learning Support Assistant, you'll provide personalised support that enables pupils to access learning, communicate effectively and experience success every day.

Working closely with teachers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and other specialists, you'll help deliver engaging learning experiences while supporting pupils' physical, emotional and personal development.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils on an individual and small-group basis throughout the school day
  • Helping children access a highly personalised curriculum tailored to their EHCP outcomes
  • Encouraging communication through approaches such as Makaton, PECS, AAC and sensory-based learning
  • Supporting pupils with physical disabilities, sensory impairments and complex learning needs
  • Assisting with personal care, mobility and daily living activities with dignity and compassion
  • Delivering engaging sensory activities that promote interaction, communication and independence
  • Building trusting relationships that help pupils feel safe, confident and understood
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and support staff to ensure consistent, holistic support
  • Promoting emotional wellbeing, positive behaviour and meaningful engagement in learning We're looking for someone who understands that progress looks different for every child and who genuinely enjoys celebrating every step forward.

You may already have experience in:

  • PMLD or specialist SEND education
  • Severe or profound learning difficulties
  • Health and social care
  • Children's residential services
  • Complex care or healthcare support
  • Autism or sensory support
  • Therapy assistant roles
  • Specialist childcare settings You'll also bring:
  • Experience supporting children or young people with complex additional needs
  • Confidence assisting with personal care and mobility support
  • A calm, patient and nurturing approach
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Full-time availability from September 2026
  • The right to work in the UK Experience with Makaton, PECS, AAC, sensory integration, Team Teach or MAPA would be an advantage but is by no means essential.

Above all, we're looking for someone with empathy, resilience and a genuine passion for helping children reach their potential.

An Enhanced DBS (Child and Adult Workforce) registered on the Update Service is essential for this position.

This is more than a Teaching Assistant role-it's an opportunity to become an integral part of a child's journey.

You’ll work in a school that invests in its staff, encourages professional development and recognises the difference compassionate, skilled support makes to every pupil and family.
