Learning Support Specialist - Literacy & Numeracy

Location: Greater Manchester
Salary: £13 - £15 per hour, depending on role and experience
Hours: Full-Time / Part-Time
Contract Type: Temporary / Term-Time Only

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Learning Support Specialist - Literacy & Numeracy to support learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across further education settings in Greater Manchester
.
The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff to provide targeted interventions, individualised support, and practical assistance to help learners overcome barriers to learning. This role is ideal for someone passionate about improving learner outcomes and helping students develop the confidence and essential skills required for further education, employment, and independent living.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support in English, maths, literacy, and numeracy.
  • Deliver targeted interventions to improve reading, writing, spelling, communication, and mathematical understanding.
  • Support learners in developing Functional Skills and everyday numeracy.
  • Adapt learning materials and support strategies to meet individual learner needs.
  • Support learners with a range of SEND needs, including learning difficulties, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and communication difficulties.
  • Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback to teaching staff.
  • Assist learners in developing confidence, independence, study skills, and employability skills.
  • Support learners in working towards their EHCP outcomes where appropriate.
  • Promote inclusive learning practices and positive learner engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with lecturers, tutors, SEND teams, and other support professionals.
Essential Requirements
  • Previous experience supporting learners with SEND in an educational setting.
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Good understanding of English and mathematics curriculum delivery.
  • Ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt learning strategies to individual learner needs.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting learner achievement, independence, and inclusion.
  • Experience working within a school, college, sixth-form, or further education environment.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
  • GCSE Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
  • Level 3 qualification in Education, Supporting Teaching and Learning, SEND, or a related field.
  • Experience delivering literacy and numeracy interventions.
  • Experience supporting learners within Further Education (FE) colleges
    .
  • Knowledge of dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, ADHD, and other learning differences.
  • Experience supporting Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths.
  • Experience contributing to EHCP outcomes or individual learning plans.
