Position: 1:1 Teaching Assistant
Location: Trafford

New Directions are seeking a caring and experienced 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 5 pupil with Autism and ADHD at a partner primary school in Trafford. This is a full-time role starting in September 2026 and will initially continue until the February half term, with the potential for the placement to be extended.

The successful candidate will provide dedicated 1:1 support to a non-verbal pupil, helping them access the curriculum, develop communication and build confidence and independence. We are looking for someone with a good understanding of Autism, ADHD and non-verbal communication who can provide calm, consistent and personalised support.

The Role
  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 5 pupil throughout the school day
  • Support the pupil to access and engage with the Year 5 curriculum through differentiated activities
  • Use appropriate communication strategies and visual supports to support a non-verbal pupil
  • Help develop the pupil’s communication, social skills, independence and emotional regulation
  • Support the pupil to manage attention, transitions and changes to routine
  • Build a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil, providing consistent and nurturing support
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider support team to follow individual targets and strategies
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback on the pupil’s development and engagement
The Candidate
  • Previous experience working with children with SEND is essential
  • Experience supporting children with Autism and ADHD is highly desirable
  • A good understanding of supporting non-verbal children and alternative communication methods
  • Experience working on a 1:1 basis within a primary school is desirable
  • A patient, calm and nurturing approach with the ability to remain consistent and reassuring
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to adapt support to meet the individual needs of the pupil
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
